Group D Thick and Creamy, the largest group of 12 players and 42 matches, culminated in a close battle between players Edwards and Singh; both in their first tournament finals. Games were tight with the point leader being exchanged various times. One game even went to a 17-15 Tie Break in favour of Singh, but Edwards managed to close off the final in 4 games with superior deep shots; besting his opponent at critical points.
The Special Playoff saw Da Silva taking the opening game against the 2022 U17 Caribbean Champion Verwey. This is the first game Da Silva has ever taken off his team mate and bodes well for his future. The Caribbean Champion awakened from the improved performance of Da Silva and raised his play level, in turn securing the next 3 Games.
The awards of ‘Most Promising Girl’ went to Malia Maikoo who fought fiercely through many tough matches, handling high pressure scenarios with a level head.
The ‘Most Promising Boy’ Richard Rodrigues took his debut tournament by storm. His grit and tenacious play style tested the top players of his category, with the Tournament Director Deje Dias giving a nod of approval to his performance.
The ‘Heart of a Champion’ award went to young Zion Hickerson (Age 8), who is a racket sport prodigy, showing talents in Table Tennis and Lawn Tennis. Zion has added Squash to his growing repertoire of being a top junior athlete.
The true importance of this event is that it functions as a scouting event for the National Junior Squad. The GSA has selected 9 Girls and 13 boys for their squad and 11 younger players for the Developmental Squad. The full list is outlined below.
