“Entrepreneurs play a major role since we don’t just build a business and grow our personal wealth, we also positively impact the economy and in some cases create jobs and develop the market.”

Kaieteur News – Having been out of a job back in 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lashazia Tiana Adams had to look at alternative ways of providing for her family. One viable way that presented itself, was the launching of ‘LA Customs’; a customizing business that provides personalized T-Shirts and Gift items for all occasions.
Adams in a recent interview with this magazine said that the business which was launched on August 4, 2020, was inspired after the pandemic struck.
“I started my business during the pandemic as a way of making ends meet since I was out of work and looking for something to occupy my time,” she related.
Adams further explained that what led her to the customizing business idea was when she stumbled upon it on her YouTube page. “I was preparing to re-sit the CXC math exam and when COVID-19 hit and everything went online I started following a math class on YouTube and you know how YouTube is always suggesting random stuff, a video came up on ‘How to start a t-shirt business at home,” she said.
She noted that this grabbed her attention which led her to do more research to know how to go about starting the business. After making up her mind that this was something she wanted to pursue, Adams said she “invested my money I was saving for UG and that’s how I got started.”
Having been in operation for over two years, the mother of one said that her business has been doing well so far. She stated that she was surprised by the overwhelming response and level of support she has been receiving for her work.
Grateful for the support, Adams made mention that one of the biggest challenges she had faced with the business has been shipping and being unable to keep up with the fluctuating customs charges that “we have no control over”.
She related that her solution to this was to always ship in bulk; have someone pack in the USA then ship to Guyana. The only downside to this “is it takes time and I can’t run out of anything since I can’t source it in Guyana,” she added.
As it relates to the pandemic, Adams said it actually helped her business grow at the pace it did, because people were home and “a personalized birthday or anniversary t-shirt just made things feel a little normal for those small at-home celebrations and that allowed me to expand my business.”
With bigger things planned for LA Customs, Adams shared that her ultimate goal is for her business to become one of the leading printing businesses in Guyana, offering a variety of services including Signs, Embroidery and much more.
Our featured entrepreneur this week is of the firm belief that small business owners in our society today make a meaningful impact in the country’s economy. She stated that, “Entrepreneurs play a major role since we don’t just build a business and grow our personal wealth, we also positively impact the economy and in some cases create jobs and develop the market.”
When asked what she thinks can be done to boost small businesses, she mentioned that: “We would be able to boost small businesses by making access to loans not so stressful and in some cases nearly impossible with the list of requirements.”
