Dear Editor,
When President Irfaan Ali said “Guyana is a nice place,” I am absolutely sure he made that statement with the utmost sincerity and honesty, and I am in full agreement with the President. However, there are some in our midst who have misinterpreted that affirmation to mean, that Guyana is a “nice place” where anyone can carry out their evil trades. I guess some would have opined that Guyana has now become a satellite country where they can setup their drug trafficking and money laundering empire.
I make my conclusion based on the prime fact that these cases of underworld activities are having a marked increase in their occurrences. And we are here speaking of an increase of persons being caught, heaven knows of the many others that have gone undetected. Of this lot, foreigners or persons of other nationalities form the bulk of the arrests.
In light of the foregoing, I call on the Attorney-General, Anil Nandlall, to look into making some serious adjustments to the law that deals with money laundering and drugs trafficking. There should be a revisit of the laws governing such activities as we go forward in our amendments to the constitution. I am also making some suggestions as it relates to these heinous crimes, which mandates that at the end of their sentencing aliens should be promptly deported.
We have nothing to fear on this note, because we are in good company where the deportation clause comes into effect, The Government of The United States of America does it so why don’t we? We are already burdened by an overflowing prison population with such criminals so why be further burdened by the foreign infiltration? As someone posited on my Facebook Page that even the foreigners are in “The hustle,” that is, taking advantage of the “Guyana Nice” slogan. Well for my part, I promptly responded that the foreigners at the end of their sentencing should take their hustle back to where they came from.
I am most welcoming when it comes to foreigners taking advantage of a life here on our shores, but I cannot countenance for one moment, that they are making criminal inroads in my country, and for this, I want punishment swift and condign.
Respectfully,
Neil Adams
