Dear Editor,
I ran into an acquaintance of mine recently. I greeted him and asked him how his son was. Fighting back the tears he related how his son had been found – dead! This was a young man who had been introduced to drugs a few years ago.
He was in his twenties, brilliant, with a promising future, but his life came crashing down when someone introduced him to drugs! I’m appealing to the authorities not to turn a blind eye on the drug kingpins and hold on to the ” small fish”. Persons have become so unconscionable that they trade the lives of our precious youth for ‘ big bucks’! The law is for the lawless! Too often the masterminds and the “connected” go free and the ” small fish” are prosecuted!
I recently read ( both online and in the press) of a gentleman who was bullied, gun- butted and robbed of his cell phone, allegedly by the bodyguards of someone who boasted of having ‘ high connections’. Is this file still with the DPP? When will travesty of justice end?
“Righteousness exalts a nation…” We will not prosper ( oil or no oil) if we allow lawlessness to reign!
I appeal to ears and hearts that have not been hardened – Let righteousness and justice reign!
A letter from Dr. Roshan Khan recently appeared in at least two of our daily newspapers. In it he lamented the cessation of religious education in our schools that so many of us benefited from.
I quote from the Guyana Times edition, dated 11th. February 2023: “The question I have been asking myself after reading the reports of violence against our teachers in our schools here in Guyana is, “What is responsible for this complete breakdown of morals in our school system?” The answer that I seem to be always getting is stemming from the removal of Religious Education from our schools’ academic curriculum.” I endorse that letter. Man is not just body. Our spirits need godly inputs to thrive and when this is lacking our imaginations and inclinations become warped. May God help us all to seek Him, to instill good moral values into our children – the men and women of tomorrow- and thus enjoy a blessed and prosperous Guyana. Happy Mashramani!
Regards,
Claudia Heywood
