Kaieteur News – Six batsmen registered centuries last Sunday in the final preliminary round of the Essequibo Softball Cricket League’s (ESCL) Over-40, T20 competition.
At Hibernia ground, stalwart player Ramesh Narine slammed 159 to follow up his 118 the previous week.
Narine struck 13 sixes and 11 fours to help Invaders Masters piled up a gigantic 308-3 from the 20-overs, while Hibernia Strikers replied with 283-8 when the 20-overs ran out.
Gopaul Deen chipped in with 77 to support the flamboyant left-handed Narine. When
Hibernia Strikers batted, Sidieque Ramjohn was the other centurion in the match by hitting 106 as Richie Bishop and Raj Rambarack claimed two wickets apiece, delivering for Invaders Masters.
Across at Queenstown ground, former Essequibo Senior Inter-County wicketkeeper/batsman Prashad Mahadeo struck a belligerent 144 to spur defending champions Caribbean Cricket Club 2 to a comprehensive 90-run victory over Devonshire Castle Sports Club. Prashad got useful support from Patrick Rooplall with 77 as their team raced to 296-3 at the expiration of the 20-overs while Devonshire Castle Sports Club, in reply, reached 206 all out in the 20th over.
Vishwanauth Lall offered a decent fight with 100, while Latchman Singh made 32 as Rooplall proved his all-round capability by grabbing four wickets for 40 runs from his maximum four overs. Yaseer Mohammed picked up two for 36 off four overs as well bowling for Caribbean Cricket Club 2.
And at the same venue, Lloyd Inniss’ 115 for Queenstown Tigers went in vain as his team suffered a thrilling eight-run loss to Sunrisers Masters.
Sunrisers Masters tallied up a challenging 255-5 from the 20-overs while Queenstown Tigers, in response, were left stranded at 247-6 when proceedings came to an end.
Motielall Deepnarine made 50 to offer Inniss support as Paulo Narine took 4-40 in his four-over outing.
For Sunrisers Masters, another Ex-Essequibo Inter-county player, Ravi Beharry with an even century to be the other batsman getting to the landmark. Shivsankar Bissoon was also in the runs-column for the winner with an impressive 50.
Seow Sankar and Seepersaud Sankar (unrelated) were the wicket-takers for Sunrisers Masters with two each.
Meanwhile, the first semi-final is set for this Sunday at a venue to be announced. Caribbean Cricket Club 2 will clash with Sunrisers Masters while the second semi is billed for February 26 also at a venue to be announced. Invaders Masters will tackle Devonshire Castle Sports Club.
Again this year’s competition is being played in memory of Dave Tajeshwar who was an ardent supporter of softball. His brother Vo Tajeshwar continues to be one of the main sponsors.
