– Rudder takes up President’s post
Kaieteur News – Former National Athletics Champion and Retired Senior Superintendent of Prison, Neil Rudder was unanimously elected as President of the New Amsterdam United Athletics Club (NAUAC).
Rudder, a former middle and long distance champion, was elected when the body held their election of office bearers recently in New Amsterdam.
Rudder replaced long serving educator and sports and community activist, Buster Wright, who held the post from 2013 to 2022.
A number of other persons were elected to serve as executives members. Those elected are Roger Trotman as Vice President, Naoimi Wright – Secretary, Maurice Monroe – Treasurer, Perpetua Wright – Assistant Secretary, Collie Mickle – Assistant Treasurer, Thomas Bowman and Omefa Sampson will serve as Committee Members.
The club has also named a number of persons including former National athletes as coaches. Those identified so far are former National Sprint champion, Bowman, who will take charge of the sprints.
Mickle will be in charge of the field events while Rudder will be taking charge of the middle and long distance athletes.
The NAUAC was established in August 2011. Its first President was present New Amsterdam Mayor and retired educator, Winifred Harewood, who served until 2013 when she was replaced by Wright.
The club presently has 48 members and every effort will be made to increase its membership.
The club usually trains at the famous Burnham Park, in New Amsterdam. However, since the Burnham Park is unfit for use due to current rehabilitation ongoing at the facility, the members are forced to use other places to train including the Canje Bridge.
According to Rudder the club will try to engage the service of other former national athletes so that they could pass on their knowledge to the younger athletes. (Samuel Whyte)
