2023 West Indies Champonship…
Kaieteur News – A tense final session in a see-saw battle between the Guyana Harpy Eagles and Windward Islands Volcanoes ended with the Guyanese team holding on for a draw in their second round 2023 West Indies Championship encounter, yesterday, at the National Cricket Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.
Kevin Sinclair posted his highest First Class batting score of 77, as he remained unbeaten when the umpire called close of play on the fourth and final day, with Harpy Eagles on 250 – 9 from 91 overs.
Volcanoes plastered 294 on the board in their first innings and restricted Guyana to 169. Volcanoes then commenced their second innings with a lead of 125 runs, but were restricted to 168 in their second innings, leaving a target of 294 needed for victory by Harpy Eagles.
In their reply, Guyana ended day three on 35 – 0 with Matthew Nandu (18) and Tevin Imlach (13) overnight in the middle.
When the fourth day commenced, the pair took the score to 54 before Imlach was adjudged leg before wicket for 25 in the 23rd over. Kemol Savory (7) was the new batsman but his stay was brief as he departed with the score on 65, which brought out the captain, Leon Johnson.
Nandu was watchful in the partnership with his captain that accumulated 65 runs. However, in the 46th over, Johnson tried to pull a short one from Daurius Martin down the leg side and gloved it to the wicketkeeper, Tevyn Walcott.
Johnson’s dismissal for 40 took the score to 123 – 3 then the rain intervened and delayed play for close to half of an hour. Play resumed with Anthony Bramble (3) as the new batsman but his tenure in the middle was short; Guyana were now 140 – 4.
During the partnership with Bramble, Nandu was able to reach the half century mark for the second time in his new first class career, but lost his wicket to Preston McSween, two deliveries after Bramble’s dismissal, as the board ticked over to 141 – 5 in the 51st over.
Akshaya Persaud and Sinclair banded together to produce a 64-run sixth-wicket partnership before Persaud went after a tempting wide delivery outside the off stump from Justin Greaves, and edged it to Walcott on 24.
That brought together Sinclair and Veerasammy Permaul (4) with Guyana on 205 – 6, but the latter was bowled by Kaveem Hodge to take Guyana to 210 – 7 in the 73rd over. Volcanoes were then sensing victory when Shamar Joseph (0) and Nial Smith (0) lost their wickets with the score on 210 and 211, respectively.
The final batsman, Ronsford Beaton, joined Sinclair with 17.1 overs left in the day. Sinclair achieved his second first class half century during the final partnership and faced 138 deliveries in the effort to successfully claim the draw. Beaton made only one but lasted 24 challenging deliveries.
When the dust settled, McSween had 3 – 58, Greaves claimed 2 – 35, while Martin and Kenneth Dember bagged a wicket each.
Meanwhile, Darren Bravo scored another century for Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in their match against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, but the encounter ended in a draw.
Summarized Scores: Trinidad & Tobago Red Force 418-9 declared off 126.5 overs (Darren Bravo 100, Imran Khan 92, Yannic Cariah 52, Terrance Hinds 51; Jeremiah Louis 3-78, Colin Archibald 3-111) and 183-5 declared off 43.4 overs (Darren Bravo 100*, Jeremy Solozano 26; Kofi James 3-39, Sheeno Berridge 2-32) versus Leeward Islands Hurricanes 302 off 100.1 overs (Keacy Carty 95, Rakheem Cornwall 67; Bryan Charles 4-84, Khary Pierre 3-63, Yannic Cariah 2-24) and 72-1 off 23 overs (Montcin Hodge 34*, Kieran Powell 21)
