Kaieteur News – The expression that great things come from Linden was again recognized, when a daughter of the bauxite soil reached the pinnacle of her academic career, by graduating a doctor of scholar at just 26 years old. Dr. Tiffany Arthur, a former student of the New Silver City Secondary School (NSSS) and Mackenzie High School in Linden, was able to successfully complete the highest-ranking academic achievement – a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Developmental Studies, at a University in the South Pacific.
Dr. Arthur, a resident of Amelia’s Ward Linden, has risen against all odds and stereotypes to cop this great achievement at a relatively young age.
She was quick to highlight that her journey was no sprint; in fact, it was a long distance one of patience, determination, courage and persistence. But, it is a journey that she has not regretted. “Perseverance, discipline and persistence, are vital if you desire to be a successful academic. Sacrifices are the investments so at the onset or along the course of your journey, you must give up the short-term comforts for the long-term win. Obtaining academic excellence is not a sprint, you have to be patient and stay the course; great things take time,” she told Kaieteur News.
Tiffany completed her Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) at the Mackenzie High School, before commencing her tertiary journey at the University of Guyana, where she read for a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies. Though this alone signified academic success, Tiffany yearned for more and with the highest level of determination, she went after it. Tiffany benefited from a scholarship funded by the European Union and pursued her Masters and PhD in Developmental Studies.
How did she manage to achieve all of this so young? Tiffany said she is a purpose-driven woman, who was determined to be a proud product of her environment.
“I am proud of this earned achievement for myself and my community. Hailing from a deprived community which faces unique socioeconomic challenges, it is self-fulfilling as a young woman to have risen against all odds and stereotypes. Linden has always been number one in the business of producing the very best on all platforms so I am a proud product of my environment,” she said.
Since her return in 2019, Dr. Arthur has returned to her alma mater, the University of Guyana to serve. “A strong foundation is key, having sacrificed years toward my academic advancement; I am truly living a multifaceted life that’s fit for purpose. Some of which include pledging my service to the University of Guyana, private work as a development consultant and building my scientific research portfolio.” She has also already presented a fundamental piece of scientific research at the International Development Conference in New Zealand, alongside copping scientific publications in two internationally recognised journals in the South Pacific.
With the wealth of knowledge she gained during her academic career, she has plans to utilise it for the benefit of her community. There are a number of community-based sustainable development initiatives she plans to pursue, which will strengthen the economy and social well-being of the people in her community.
The young Lindener is encouraging her fellow Linden youths to not see her achievement as far reaching or as impossible mission, but the only way it can be achieved is by someone who wants to achieve it. “Having a positive mindset is pivotal, so begin with two beliefs-your future can be better than your present and you have the power to make it so. Additionally, do not let anyone project their fears and faithful limitations they have placed on their lives onto you – stay focused, remain relentless in your pursuit,” she said.
