Kaieteur News – A businessman, who would have been celebrating his 40th birthday today, is nursing a gunshot wound at the New Amsterdam Hospital after trying to fend off four armed men who robbed and shot him at Cumberland, East Canje Berbice.
Injured is Jagdeo Phillips called “Zacaria”, a farmer and businessman of Lot 201 Victoria Street, Cumberland Village. Phillips was shot and robbed by the quartet who invaded his family’s business on Friday night.
Kaieteur News understands that a 68-year-old woman is the owner of the business located at 194 Victoria Street, Cumberland. The woman lives with her grandchildren, a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old.
Phillips, who lives nearby, would usually visit the business place in the evenings to help secure the shop before the occupants retire to bed.
The 18-year-old, who is Phillips’ son, told Kaieteur News that between 21:30hrs and 22:30hrs, he left his grandmother, sister and father in the shop area and ventured to the back of the building to have a bath. Shortly thereafter, the young man said he heard screams. This caused him to rush out to see what was happening.
The teenager said when he returned to the front of the building, he saw masked men armed with cutlasses and guns in the shop. Two of the armed men were in a scuffle with his father while another was pointing a gun at his sister.
He recalled that it was shortly after a shot was fired injuring his father. One of the invaders then stole his father’s gold and silver jewellery.
The teen said that his wounded father then armed himself with a spade and ran behind the bandits who were trying to escape. Unfortunately, the armed quartet had already taken money from the shop and Phillips.
The quartet made good their escape and Phillips collapsed while pursuing them. He was subsequently rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he remains a patient.
Meanwhile, police said a total of $700,000 was stolen along with gold and silver jewellery.
