Feb 09, 2023 Letters
Dear Editor,
I write this letter as a follow up to one I did recently regarding the overbearing traffic situation on the West Bank of Demerara in the mornings titled: ‘An urgent solution to the morning traffic chaos on the West Bank of Demerara is needed,’ published on February 2, 2023.
Sadly, not much has been done by the Guyana Police Force’s Region 3 Traffic Division to arrest the situation. Senior officers at the harbour bridge junction become irate with drivers wishing to proceed south on the West Bank Demerara Public Road in the mornings. It seems as if the West Bank Demerara Public Road from Schoonord to the harbour bridge junction is the exclusive purview of drivers wishing to cross the bridge in the mornings, and as a result, anyone not crossing the harbour bridge must suffer at the hands of some of the most unscrupulous drivers.
Since the Guyana Police Force seem incapable of efficiently and effectively managing this untenable traffic situation, I will suggest a possible solution that they can implement.
In a consistent manner from Monday to Friday there must be a sensible police presence along the West Bank Demerara Public Road between Schoonord and the Harbour Bridge, to ensure that drivers not crossing the bridge have room on the road to do so safely – that also means drivers proceeding north along the same road. Misguided police officers must not force drivers proceeding south on the West Bank Public Road approaching the harbour bridge junction to join a long line of cars turning to go on the bridge. If simple common sense prevails this situation can be rectified with alacrity.
Police are placed on the West Bank Public from Schoonord Road heading north and the lawlessness on that side of the road has stopped. So, the solution that I am recommending is already being tried at another part of the road. I just hope those in charge of traffic management on the west side think harder and come up with a sensible solution to the morning anarchy that currently exists. There must be a free lane for drivers proceeding south and north along the West Bank Public Road. Traffic ranks must be sensible enough to know this and ensure that enough lane space is free at all times. Drivers wishing to cross the Harbour Bridge must maintain discipline on the roadways or be disciplined accordingly by the police.
For far too long the traffic ranks on the west have allowed this situation to develop and get out of hand. It is time some level of order is restored to the morning commute on the west bank of Demerara.
Yours faithfully,
Frustrated driver
