The Creators’ Coven…
Kaieteur News – As the Mashramani and Carnival seasons draw near, local performers are in high gear preparing for the various events and competitions. Thirty-seven year old Denis King is no different, as he looks toward the upcoming Soca Monarch competition. With over five released singles and two winnings under his belt, the performer is no stranger to the entertainment game and is looking to extend his winning streak, while making a significant impact in that arena. Like other participants, King is currently awaiting response from competition organizers to whom they have submitted their material for the season.
In discussions with the Creators’ Coven, King said that his new song is called “Soca Jumbie”. The title, he explained, is fitting, as he is addicted to the excitement and fanfare that comes from the music and events of mass. “I just love it. Soca music gets the heart going and the body must move. Even if you are upset or sad, Soca music sometimes just hits the spot because it just makes you want to move and dance and be happy again.”
King told the magazine that he eagerly awaits the upcoming event and patrons can surely look forward to his performance. “I plan to come out there and do my best of course. And my best usually involves myself and my fans having fun,” King said. “The revelers will have a good time,” the artiste continued, as he guaranteed that patrons will “buss a sweat” and enjoy themselves to his song. “Don’t forget the energy. Soca is all about energy and I have a lot of that, so my fans won’t be let down,” the artist submitted.
King is no stranger to the Soca or entertainment industry. He is an independent artiste that is making waves not just in the Soca arena, but in Chutney as well. Born and raised in Berbice, King attended the Litchfield Community School and was already interested in the art form from an early age. He said that although no family member was involved in music, he has always had the love and talent to match. The artistes said initially he would freestyle and write his own lyrics, despite no real opportunity being available at the time for him to grow his talent.
Over the years however, King said, he further developed his skills with vocal practice and later went to Trinidad and Tobago where he made his first recordings of “Don’t Stop Me” and “Roll It”. This, he said, was done in a professional studio and was well received by music promoters who later hired him to perform live and at events around the country. Back in Guyana, King said he signed up for the Guyana Chutney Competition 2021 where he was a finalist. In 2022, he said he was also a finalist in the CPL Soca/ Chutney competition, but later won the Jamzone Song Competition.
The artiste is currently managed by Canadian based Record Label Jaggy Records and attached to Dream Chaser Music, a recording studio in Guyana. King said he is keen on using his talents to engage with youth and to encourage others who would want to pursue their dream in this area, to go for it. Music, he said, can be used as a medium to communicate with persons and get messages across. The artiste believes that music on a whole is a positive mechanism to address a lot of the social issues facing our societies as well as a means of sending joy to persons.
