Kaieteur News – Looking to one day open her own nail school and provide opportunities in a big way for others, is nail technician Iana Ashanti Hercules.
Thirty-three-year-old Hercules is the proud owner of a popularly known nail salon called ‘CreativeNails by GirlBoss’. The business started in November 2017, providing unique and glamourous nail service to many.
In an exclusive interview with this magazine, Hercules who hails from Matthews Ridge, Region One, said that what had inspired her to open this business is the deep passion she had since she was a child. “I’ve always had a passion and love for nails and art since I was a kid, and I knew one day I would have my own nail studio, so I worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices to become the boss babe I am today,” she told this magazine.
Making a name for itself in the local industry, ‘CreativeNails by GirlBoss’ offers services such as pedicures, manicures, full-sets, Gel-x nail extensions, just to name a few. Through her business, Hercules offers training and workshops for anyone who is interested and wants to acquire the necessary skills to be part of the field. Upon completion, persons receive a certificate.
Hercules shared that since being in business, the support she received has been great over the past years. “From my regular clients to new ones, also my friends have been my biggest supporters,” she noted.
Along the way too, she mentioned that the business did face some challenges but it certainly did not dim the light on her operation. These challenges she explained are the inflation of prices on products. And while the revenue potential for nail styling is significant, the practice faces its share of unique challenges. “Along with the struggles of running any business, nail salons often face low profit margins, limited product inventory, and specialized health regulations,” she added.
As it relates to the pandemic, she shared that it took a huge impact on her business, forcing her to close down for some time. “The pandemic had affected my business a great deal, because the country was closed down. I had to close my business for a couple months because of the COVID- 19 regulations the Government had in place,” she said. Though it was challenging, she noted that she is grateful at the same time because personally she did not contract COVID-19.
With a lot in store for this business, when asked what her long-term goal is, the mother of one mentioned that she would one day love to have a nail school, and to have her own nail products on the market both locally and internationally. Also, she would like to take her training and experiences globally and share them with other nail technicians.
When asked what role she thinks young business people play in our society, Hercules mentioned that “Entrepreneurs also help drive change through innovation, where new and improved products enable new markets to be explored.”
She added that entrepreneurship is very important because it can improve living standards; create jobs and wealth for entrepreneurs and related businesses.
With this being said, our featured entrepreneur is calling for small business owners, to make greater use of social media marketing tools to boost their businesses. “Have pop up shops, invest more into your business, invest in yourself academically, attend training sessions to boost your businesses,” she encouraged.
