Dear Editor,
We respond to an ill-informed letter published in the Kaieteur News on 11thJanuary, 2023, captioned “Is the Eugene F. Correia International Airport Really an International Airport?”, signed by John Taylor, whom is known in the aviation industry as Simeon John Taylor, once employed by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and now employed by one of the Aircraft Operators at the EFCIA.
Amongst other ludicrous remarks in his letter, Taylor likens the Airport as “one step above bush operations” in the interior. This is an Airport with over 100 aircraft movements per day, which houses 12 aircraft operating companies with fully developed and operating hangar facilities, commercial office operations and individual terminals and Exxon’s Head Office headquarters under construction.
Mr. Taylor picks on the fact that the Airport’s x-ray screening equipment is currently not functioning, but his accusation of eight (8) months is inaccurate, then he proceeds to denigrate the entire operations of the Airport. Mr. Taylor claims to have made enquiries with the Airport’s management about repairs of the x-ray equipment and makes the ridiculous assertion that “to hire certain persons for the job is political in nature”. We can say with absolute certainty that Mr. Taylor has not spoken with any of the management of EFCIA on this matter. The operations of the x-ray machine have been seriously affected on and off for some time now due to the frequent fluctuation of power supplied to the Airport. The Airport’s management is currently working with GPL to address this problem since a great deal of other highly technical equipment at the Airport can also be affected.
In the meantime, passenger baggage and cargo are subject to 100% visual inspection, actually preferred by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), ensuring that security is not compromised though, admittedly, time consuming. The Airport apologizes to the public for the inconvenience caused by this.
The x-ray scanner is made in China and the supply chain problems, which are worldwide at the moment, have made it difficult to obtain spares. As a result, the Airport is in the process of replacing it with an (American made) RAPISCAN Scanner, also used at CJIA. As for the rest of Mr. Taylor’s efforts to minimize the considerable development of the Airport, since the Lease Agreement with government for a Public Private Partnership of its Management and Operation in 2001, the government has recently approved a major Development Plan and Programme for its continuing development as Guyana’s second International Airport. The Plan involves the expansion of the domestic and international terminal, introduction of an air cargo terminal, extension and upgrading of the existing runways and taxiways, warehousing, commercial offices and hotel accommodation.
Mr. Taylor is also well aware that the Airport is in full compliance with and meets the standards of both International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Regulations and subject to regular inspection by the GCAA.
