Kaieteur News – As promised, the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has announced the start of the local hockey season with the Bounty Antonio’s Grill One Day Hockey tournament, which will take place in January at the Providence National Stadium, with dates of competition still undecided at this time.
Speaking with the President of the GHB, Philip Fernandes, on commencement of the outdoor season, he said, “We are currently securing dates for the use of the Providence National Stadium. The tournament will run as normal, featuring both male and female teams from all local clubs.”
The Bounty Antonio’s Grill hockey tournament will be a seven-a-side affair, which is a shortened format of the game. This year’s Bounty Antonio’s Grill One-Day tournament will commence in the morning hours and will run straight into the evening, culminating with the grand finals, which has a scheduled 5pm start.
This year’s competition promises to see a resurgence of all the players that were unsure in the last year’s closing tournament, the 2022 Diamond Mineral Water Hockey Festival.
In addition to this, new players who might have been up and coming in recent years will be ready and available for the start of the new hockey season.
According Fernandes, “The GHB are scheduled to send a boys and a girls Under 21 team to Barbados in April. These players will no doubt be part of this tournament. This tournament will kick start all local competitions and surely will aid players in getting their hockey skills sharpened in preparation for international tournament.
“Needless to say, we look forward to a great opener to competition and we are also hopeful to have all hockey players on show to start the 2023 on a good side,” the hockey President stated.
The last tournament was held in May 2022, when GCC Hockey Club dominated to win both the Women’s and Men’s Titles.
