Kaieteur News – The government through the Ministry of Home Affairs has expended some $82.8M to equip the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) with two excavators, a Toyota Fortuner SUV, three double cab pick-ups a motorcycle and five bicycles.
Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, on Wednesday officially handed over the equipment to the GFS. Benn at the simple handing over ceremony reportedly said that the purchase “represents continuous improvement of the Fire Service” while the Fire Chief, Gregory Wickham added it will be used to “enhance GFS firefighting efforts”.
According to the Fire service, the excavators will remain in the Region 4 district to plant new fire hydrants while the motorcycle will be sent to boost firefighting efforts at Lethem, Region Nine. One of the pick-ups will remain in Region Four while the other two will be sent to Region 2 and 6 respectively. The bicycles, stated GFS, will be distributed to each division across the coast and the SUV will be used to transport the fire chief and other senior fire officers.
