– Region 4 vs Region 5; Region 3 vs region 7
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur News – The highly anticipated semi-finals of the One Guyana President’s Cup will take place this evening at the National Track and Field Centre.
In the opening game from 6:00 pm, Region 4 will take on Region 5, while at 8:00 pm, the home side, Region 3 and Region 7 will go head-to-head.
The tournament, fashioned by President Irfaan Ali and administered by the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation, along with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), had an exciting climax to the Group stage, setting the tone for what will be stimulating semis.
Region 3 finished on top of Group B after a heated exchange with Region 10, which ended in a 2 – 2 stalemate on Monday at the West Demerara facility.
Entering their final Group B game on five points (a win and two draws), Region 10 needed a win to advance.
Both Region 10 and Region 5 were locked on five points entering their final game, but in the opening game on Monday, the West Coast Berbice team slammed in six goals against Region 2 to win 6 – 1.
Region 10, playing Region 3, saw the score line sticking at zero at the end of the first stanza. Coach Anthony Stephens replaced an injured Donavon Francis with former youth National player Shane Luckie and immediately, the game changed.
Luckie, the burly forward known for his scoring ability in Linden’s club football structure, buried the game’s first goal from a well-taken free-kick just four minutes into the second half.
Pandemonium broke out soon after (59th minute) when Jahsawn Moore rifled home the goal of the tournament.
Taken from just over the halfway line on the pitch, Moore’s free-kick rocked the net after he timed his shot to perfection.
It was all Region 10.
However, Coach Nantambu Bilal made some changes after going down two goals, and things paid off.
Second-half sub but a usual starter in the tournament, Roundel Hutson started the comeback in the 73rd minute with his goal.
Referee Gladwyn Johnson kept a stern whistle in the tournament, and the Region 3 vs Region 10 clash was no different.
Eleven players (five from Region 10, six from Region 3) picked up yellow cards at various points in the game, but a nonsensical tackle by Nicholas Gentle saw him booked in the 80th minute and for the second time in the game, which meant that Region 10 reduced to 10 men.
In the next position in the game (81st minute), Kobi Alexander headed home the equalizer.
Region 3 just needed a draw to advance and when Region 10 failed to score another goal, the result saw the Essequibo Islands/West Demerara team finishing on top of Group B to set up their clash with Region 7.
Meanwhile, the game’s opening game had little to cheer about, other than Region 5 showing their goal-scoring prowess against the weaker Region 2 team.
Apart from the $2M up for grabs for the winner, each player will pocket $80,000 as a one-off payment.
Team captains received $100,000. The head coach of each team collected $100,000, while members of his coaching staff received $80,000.
For each win in the group stage, teams were rewarded $200,000, and each semi-finalist will collect $400,000. Second place team to get $1M.
