“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss,” this is what led 31-year-old Dianne Mekdeci to opening her own business: ‘Teenie’s’, which offers scrumptious cakes and savoury baked dips.
During an interview with The Waterfalls, Dianne said, “My business started in 2019. Mainly I would make birthday cakes for my friends. My biggest pet peeve is a pretty cake that tastes awful or is dry. I’d always say “dry cake is bread with icing, not cake.” Eventually, they began ordering from me for other people’s birthdays – and it snowballed from there.”
There are about 30 different flavours of cheesecakes and cakes on Teenie’s menu. Also, Dianne explained that she is always adding to the list.
“Lately, I’ve been experimenting with seasonal flavours. I also make savoury baked dips. For example, I make a mushroom dip, pizza dip & buffalo chicken dip. I also have sweet dips like ‘Twix or s’mores’. I have a variety of sauces like my sweet chili sauce or my vodka sauce. There’s also a fair selection of other sweet treats like my apple peanut butter dessert or my ‘sex in a pan’, which is a layered dessert,” the Business Owner said.
Being versed in the kitchen, Dianne also offers other food like stuffed pasta shells, lasagna, and much more.
To this she added, “I’m constantly torn between adding more items or cutting down.”
When asked about her best sellers, Dianne said, “It’s hard to choose one, I can name one of a few though. Bailey’s chocolate cake, apple crumble cheesecake, sweet chili sauce, sweet pepper and spinach dip, ‘sex in a pan’ and probably my stuffed shells.”
Dianne’s business has catered for businesses like Digicel and WTG. She did Mother’s Day cakes for Digicel and desserts snacks for WTG press conference. In addition to that, she also caters for weddings and parties.
“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, you could say entrepreneurship runs in the family. My Grandfather had his own business and so do many of my relatives. I’ve always been inspired by my Grandfather’s story – he took his family’s small business and helped it to flourish,” Dianne explained.
The business is located at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara and is opened seven-days weekly. Notably, all items are made by order.
Dianne shared, “I was born and basically raised in Canada by my mom – whom I’m grateful for. In Canada, you’re exposed to so many different cultures and types of food. I love to travel & meet new people – I love speaking to complete strangers, you meet some very interesting individuals. I enjoy writing, I even began writing a book but more than that, I love to read. I’m a sucker for a good fictional romance novel, Kresley Cole’s ‘Immortals After Dark’ series is one of my favourites.”
Her long-term goal with her business is that she would like for her products such as her dips and sauces to be in stores around the region, and also in North America as well.
