At Christmas, we tend to put lots of emphasis on perfecting our home, ensuring we purchase the best gifts for our loved ones, and whipping up a delicious lunch or dinner. But that does not mean we should not focus on looking our best!
For those who focus on ‘dressing to impress’ or even those who give it little thought, we will help you pull the perfect outfit out the wardrobe to wow your spouse, guests or maybe just the rest of your family.
We know that we wear is dependent on the weather, so I will not dare suggest you ladies jump into your tank tops or a lovely long sleeved blouse. Similarly, for the males, whether you wear short or long pants, it’s really up to you.
While doing some research a month ago, I learnt that the colours you wear are very important. In fact, the colours you choose – if they complement your skin tones right – may very well cause you to be the true star this season. And I know we all don’t necessarily wish to be the centre of attraction, but we do like to look good.
Now if you’re wondering how to determine what colours match your skin, we’ll get right to it.
Find your skin tone
There are three general complexions that most people will fall into: cool, warm and neutral. Warm-toned skin has yellow, peach and gold tint, while cool-toned skin has more pink, red or blue. If you look at your wrist and notice blue or purple veins, you are most likely cool-toned but if you see green, you’re warm.
Stylecaster in a 2018 article shared some interesting points on matching colours with your complexion. It said, “Warm undertones look better in gold jewellery, whereas, cool undertones look great in silver jewellery. Generally, warmer skin tones look flattering in warmer colours (like red, orange and yellow) and cool skin tones look flattering in cooler colours (like blue, green, and purple).”
For very fair complexions, the fashion hub recommended that neutral colours be worn. In fact, it even got suggestions from Creative Director of New York’s Art + Autonomy salon, Siobhán Quinlan who said, “Something too dark or light (in hair or clothing) can sometimes feel harsh for everyday. I tend to advise my clients to stay away from those extremes unless they are really going for more of a ‘look’.” You can add subtle contrast with darker neutral colours and jewel tones.
If you’re medium-toned, meaning you are not too light and also not dark, purple, mustard, forest green, royal blue and pink would are some of your colours to rock.
Stylecaster says, if your skin tone is olive, or it resembles that of the stunning Ms. Jennifer Lopez, you would be better off wearing earth tones, green, orange, blue, pink, emerald and burgundy.
Meanwhile, they classified the beautiful American singer, Beyonce as a dark-skinned missus to give us an example of what colours we should try out. A few of these include jewel tones, white, orange, pink and yellow.
