Dear Editor,
Women are debarred from attending universities in Afghanistan. The move has sparked international condemnation by several human rights groups who view the decision, rightly, as a denial of the right to higher education for women.
Since assuming office, the Taliban administration has taken several measures to limit women’s participation in public life. This is most unfortunate given the fact that women constitute roughly half of the population. Moreover, women are known to have superior organizational and management skills and by limiting their participation in public life, society is all the more poorer.
We are indeed fortunate to be in a situation in Guyana where more than half of our university graduates and from other tertiary institutions such as the Cyril Potter College of Education and the Georgetown Nursing School are women. In fact, women dominate the teaching and nursing profession and the public service as a whole. There is a fair measure of gender equity in Guyana and legislations are in place to ensure that women are treated with respect and in a dignified manner.
Regards,
Hydar Ally
