Dear Editor,
I would like to bring to your attention a situation that has been going on at the New Amsterdam Hospital and Mental Hospital in Berbice for several months now. A member from the Fishery at No.66 Village has a contract to supply these hospitals with fresh trout but what this individual is doing is buying lower quality and cheap fish and supplying these hospitals instead.
Trout is selling for $350 a pound and the individual according to the contract was supposed to supply these hospitals with $700,000 worth of cleaned fresh trout a month, but what this individual is doing is buying low quality and cheap fish such as sea congo, snook and croaker Basha, which are selling for $60 a pound and supplying the hospitals instead. The cheap fish that is supplied to these institutions is not cleaned and prepared in a sanitary and hygienic environment and not placed in ice as it was supposed to be whilst being transported to these hospitals. These arrangements have been going on under the eyes of some of the authorities of these institutions. However, the person supplying the fish and exploiting the patients of these institutions who were supposed to be eating high quality nutritious fish at these hospitals mentioned are well-connected, and as such, no one is doing anything to stop this exploitative and corrupt arrangements.
I am asking for a thorough investigation to be done and action taken against all involved in this abuse of taxpayers money and steps taken to ensure that fresh wholesale and nutritious fish is supplied to these institutions as set out in the contract, not unsanitary, poor quality bony fish which is hazardous to the health of the patients of these institutions.
Yours sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen.
