Dear Editor,
Guyana is on the brink of ending decades of being in the economic wilderness. But that may not happen if our political leaders continue to see themselves like the ten leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel who were sent by Moses to spy out the Promised Land.
Those of us who have read the Book of Numbers in the Bible, would recall that after being in the wilderness for forty years, on reaching the Promised Land, Moses sent out the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel to spy out the land. When they returned from their mission, in the face of absolute abundance in the land, ten of the leaders were so consumed with awe of the perceived might and great stature of the occupiers of the land, that they regarded them as giants, and in comparison saw themselves as grasshoppers. And so were they seen by those who occupied the land. But Caleb, one of the twelve, vehemently opposed the view of the ten. He shut them up and declared that the people of Israel “were well able to overcome …” the giants and take possession of the land (Numbers 13:26 – 33, NKJV).
Editor, reminiscent of the ten leaders who saw giants in the Promised Land and themselves as grasshoppers, our President made it clear that negotiating with ExxonMobil was like negotiating with a superpower (giants !!). It is inexplicable that our President would put the inferiority complex of his government on such public display. So, while the exploiters of our resources are drowning in the abundance of our oil wealth, we thirst. Guyanese are stuck in the wilderness, and would be there for many years yet, unless there is a Joshua and Caleb in the political leadership to confront the foreign exploiters and take back control of what the Almighty has bequeathed to us.
Yours sincerely,
W. Richards
