Kaieteur News – Atlantic Edge Insurance Brokerage Inc., as part of its Christmas activities, on Friday hosted its first black cake competition at its David Street, Subryanville, Georgetown office.
The scent of fresh cakes soaked in rum filled the air as the five participants showcased their black cakes. Black cakes made from dried fruits, nuts, dark sugar caramel and rum are a must at Christmas time in Guyana. The cakes are soaked in rum weekly and will keep for a long time with continuous soaking.
The company had published an advertisement calling for the country’s best black cake makers to participate in the competition. The five persons who responded to the advertisement hail from the West Bank, East Bank and East Coast Demerara. They were all enthused for the judges to sample what they deemed to be ‘the best’ black cakes.
The competition was judged by four volunteers who not only sampled the cakes but graded each participant on presentation, taste, texture, and density. The person with the most points emerged the winner.
Taralyn Harris was adjudged the maker of the best black cake. She secured 69 points and won $50,000. Second place was awarded to Jacqueline Bontick-Tuell who scored 68 points and received a $30,000 while third place went to Jasmine (only name given) with 58 points. She received $15,000.
Meanwhile, Sharon Ramrattan, the Company’s Director said that black cake competition was held to add to the Christmas spirit and the pleasantries associated with the season.
“We want to build awareness that family is important, especially during this season, we want families and communities to come together as one to do something, and we wanted to create something to give back to the community,’’ she told Kaietuer News while adding that competition will be held annually.
