Kaieteur News – Ever since a young age, Carlyne A. Carew has always been a creative person. A Pharmacist by profession, Carew in 2020 decided to re-explore her creative side and launched her very own jewelry business called ‘SelftGy’.
SelfGy produces unique costume jewelry and accessories that are attractive and exquisite. This business endeavour is something Carew always loved and had a passion for.
“I have a love for unique jewelry and pieces, for me that was something that was hard to find. So I decided to dedicate my time and energy into creating my own unique, patriotic and beautiful pieces of jewelry and accessories,” she told this magazine recently.
Carew added, “I started Selft not only to fulfill this need but because of my crazy work schedule, I needed an outlet to relieve the stresses of the day.”
Selft which has been making a name for itself in the local industry has been receiving tremendous support and feedback. “The support I received from my family is simply amazing; I can’t thank them enough for being there with me every step of the way from the late nights to the exhibitions that I attend. Especially my Fiancée, Nicholas Glasgow, who helps me with taking orders, delivery and also participating at exhibitions with me; his support is unending,” Carew expressed.
Since the launch of this venture, the young woman shared that the main challenge she faces is time management. “Due to my work schedule, timing does play a factor, especially if I cover a late shift, so the business demands rollover to the wee hours of the morning, but I enjoy every moment of it,” she related.
As for the COVID-19 pandemic, Carew stated that it had a positive effect on her business, due to the fact that there was a preference for products being sold online. This she noted saved customers time and the hassle of having to encounter crowds.
When asked by the Waterfalls Magazine what is the long term goal for Selft, Carew mentioned that her long term goal is for Selft to become an official jewelry brand, for it to be used by many including designers etc.
Our 29-year-old featured Entrepreneur, is of the belief that small business owners are an important group in our society today, they raise the bar on local talent. “Young Entrepreneurs play a vital role in our society, it allows us to see what talents are undiscovered as well as giving them an opportunity to express themselves in the best was possible,” she expressed.
She suggested that for the local small business fraternity, there can be improvements by making small loans more readily available for the owners, as well as creating a directory for small businesses, making it easier for persons interested in their products and services to make contact with them.
For anyone interested in making contact with Carew or looking to place an order, Selft products can be found via their Facebook page at SefltGy and also on Instagram page @SelftGy. Or you can also find them at the Upmarket event which is slated for December 18 at Parc Rayne from 10am to 4pm.
