O’ Beautiful Guyana!
Kaieteur News – Formerly known as a hidden paradise, Lake Capoey, a black water creek nestled in Capoey village, Essequibo, Region Three, is increasingly becoming a major tourist site in the Cinderella County.
It is one of the largest of three lakes in the County.
The community was said to be founded many decades ago when some families of Amerinidian descent (Guyana’s first peoples) settled there. The inhabitants were largely of the Arawak tribe, one of more friendly Indigenous tribes in Guyana. Interestingly, the word Capoey is a Wapichan (another Amerindian tribe) name, which translates to ‘Land of the Rising Moon’.
Capoey Village is accessible by both river and road.
To access this serene village, you will need to travel along a two-mile long road which branches off from the Essequibo Public Road close to the village of Taymouth Manor, followed by boat across the Capoey Lake. Close to 400 residents now live there, with farming and timber jobs as their main source of income.
Capoey Village is headed by a seven member village council, with a Toshao as the leader. The community has its own Nursery and Primary Schools, as well as village office, library and an all purpose hall. Perhaps the most exciting infrastructure is the benabs and playground located at the front of the village, close to the lake.
The land is decorated with lush coconut trees which provide fresh coconuts that usually make for the perfect ‘cool down’ beverage. Swimming happens to be one of the favourite leisure activities for children and adults in the village. Visitors also enjoy a good splash in the stygian dark water of the lake or a thrilling boat ride on the water top. Other than the exciting lake, Capoey Village also offers an exhilarating nature walk through its heavily vegetated lands.
The Calabash Cabana Resort offers packages for couples, singles or groups looking to have a good time at the Essequibo village. Kayaking and fun on the balloon raft are just a few of the exciting activities you can enjoy.
Lake Capoey has been used as the ideal venue for wedding ceremonies and birthday celebrations. Be sure to sample some of the traditional Indigenous cuisines when you visit. These range from cassava bread and tuma pot or pepperpot to farine and the famous ‘Piwari’ and ‘Fly’ beverages.
Fresh fruits and skillfully made craft pieces are also usually available on sale at Capoey Village. These make for the perfect memorabilia.
