Dear Editor,
Mentors usually ask those they guide “what are your goals and priorities for the future?” For the poor Guyanese it’s time they answer this wisely for their and their family’s sake. People globally are protesting for all issues risking their lives and families, yet they do it as they will not be bullied, robbed or denied their rights. So, if these protesters were protesting to be the richest citizens per capita in the world, they would protest more vigorously to attain this. So, why Guyanese who have the chance to achieve this don’t? Why is this?.
In trying to solve an issue, one must look at the root cause, which is those who lead and influence an audience have failed to make Guyana’s vast wealth the top priority, choosing instead, different priorities, starting with leaders since independence whose top priority was to manage Guyana like a profitable and viable business for the benefit of the people with its resources, choose to maintain the strangling hard life from colonization on the people. Burnham said, “produce or perish”.
Hoyte, “the economic recovery program ERP will bring hardship”. Jagan “put your shoulders to the wheel”. Ali “tighten your belts for rough times ahead”. Jagdeo “it will be a while before Guyanese see benefits from their resources” yet as foreign companies declare their up-to-date profits from Guyana. The Ramoutar and Granger Governments didn’t have slogans as they were busy giving away the oil blocks and oil respectively. President Ali is doing outreach activities which is good, yet blankly saying no to fight for more from the oil deal which should be his top priority.
Parliamentarians, instead of them speaking out for Guyana’s wealth to benefit their constituents as their top priority have chosen instead to be yes-men and women to party leadership. The Media other than KN instead of providing information on Guyana’s wealth as their top priority have chosen instead to engage in tit for tat racial and political divisiveness. Fighting for Guyana’s rightful share of its wealth is not the top priority of none of the following who have influence on audiences: Unions, Business Associations, Religious Organizations, Activists, Sports and Cultural Organizations and particularly the Professional Organizations and Associations whose members like to put the letters in front and back of their names to remind us how much they studied and achieved, I don’t know of one accounting or financial decision that has benefited this country from those working for govt. or state entities, and the legal professionals who sit back and watch as untold crimes are committed on this country. We only get to know how skillful they are in law during disputed elections; many of these professionals should know their subsidized education and scholarships came from the sweat and blood of the poor they are failing to represent.
I went to school from kindergarten to post-secondary in Guyana, no teacher, instructor or professor mentioned anything on the wealth of Guyana, their first priority was to push students to achieve marks. As Guyana continues to decline, those who have influence to make a difference watch from the sidelines with glued lips only getting outraged if someone hurt their personal feelings. Everyday Guyanese complain to radio, newspaper and to other sources about their hardships, yet if you ask them if they would change their vote or hold their party accountable, one would clearly see where their priorities lie and it’s why Guyana is where it is, and poor Guyanese is where they are, question is, will their priorities ever change?
Sincerely,
R. David
