O’ Beautiful Guyana…
Kaieteur News – The Promenande Gardens is located in Georgetown and is bordered by Carmichael, New Market, Waterloo and Middle Streets.
To the south is Independence Park, the historical site of public execution of slaves who participated in the uprising of 1823. The park is separated from the gardens by Middle Street. The Gardens occupy an entire block of the Capital city, with its main entrance situated on Middle Street in Cummingsburg.
This beautiful site was designed by a botanist from Guyana’s sister CARICOM state, Trinidad. According to research, the Bandstand located inside of the gardens was erected in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Completed in 1897, it is considered the oldest bandstand of three in the city.
A well-known monument in the Gardens is the Mahatma Gandhi Monument erected in honour of the international icon of peace and advocate of non-violent protests.
The gardens consist of well laid out plantings of flowers, shrubs, and a number of trees of botanical interest. These are interlaced with walkways (thus promenade) and a number of benches.
Over the years, this site has been used to host wedding ceremonies, birthday parties, staff dinners and other special events due to the serene beauty of the venue. It is still available for rental and persons can reach out to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) in Georgetown, for bookings at a reasonable rate.
The Promenade Gardens is used for several civic functions including entertainment from music bands.
It is also the popular site of many public and private events including Easter Hat Shows, weddings, and fashion photo shoots.
In addition to planned events, you may also pop in the Promenande Gardens for a quick visit to enjoy the views of attractive flowers and the tranquillity of the environment. In fact it is one of the best spots to get away from the hustle and bustle in the busy Georgetown streets.
It may also be the perfect spot to take the family for a picnic. Just be sure to take blankets and walk with insect repellent to keep bugs away, as they enjoy the flowers quite more than humans!
The Promenande Gardens was refurbished in 2016 in observance of the country’s 50th Independence celebrations. The upgrade included repainting the fence and bandstand, refurbishing of the fountains, walkways, arches and fishing pond.
