Dec 01, 2022 Letters
Dear Editor,
Permit my response to Mr. Sultan Mohamed’s letter published in the November 28th 2022 edition of the Kaieteur News, captioned, “By his own words, Ogunseye’s position on violence is unchanged”.
Your letter writer correctly observed that I did not respond to his previous letter as he requested. My failure to do so was deliberate since I had already done so when I gave evidence in the Walter Rodney COI, the correct forum to set the historical record straight. Presently I have nothing more to add on the subject. Mr. Mohamed assertions about Walter Rodney, Eusi Kwayana and Rupert Roopnarine is his propagandizing, are just putting words in the comrades’ mouth – he has absolutely no idea about the close and comradely political relationship between EusiKwayana, Rupert Roopnarine, and Walter Rodney.
However, on this occasion, Mr. Mohamed earned my response by the candid observation/declaration he espoused with finesse at the end of his letter. He writes, “What is now clear is that with the African masses at the bottom of the economic ladder, it will always provide fodder for agitators to seek cause for dissension….” My emphases here: “Africans at the bottom of the economic ladder”. Thank you, Mr. Mohamed, for your honest and candid description of the African condition in Guyana!I take this opportunity remind you and Prime Minister Mark Phillips that 23 uninterrupted plus two years of PPP rule has been a major contributor to our condition in recent times. The late President Cheddi Jagan after he came to power in 1992 stated that Africans were at the bottom of the “social ladder”. He apologized and it was generally accepted. During the controversy I took the position that Dr. Jagan experienced a slip of the tongue when he referenced “social ladder” instead of “economic ladder”. My point is that this realization of the African condition by the PPP leadership emerged in 1992 and persisted and got worse after 25 years of PPP rule.
I conclude by restating that we Africans know that ‘One Guyana’under PPP rule is economic and social violence.
Yours sincerely,
Tacuma Ogunseye
