Kaieteur Sports – The football competition which was dubbed “The King of the Eight a side Town Week competition” was organised by the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam.
There were eight teams that participated in the competition which was played as part of the Town’s 132nd Anniversary celebrations. The competition was played on a knock out basis and held at the All Saints Scot Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The games were one hour affairs.
As a mark of inclusion this year, the M&TC included four teams from out of New Amsterdam to be a part of the mix. They were Fort Ordnance (East Canje), Edinburg (East Bank Berbice), Sandvort, Locaber (West Canje) and Fyrish, Gibraltar (Corentyne).
The teams from New Amsterdam were Tucber Park, Central New Amsterdam, Stanleytown and Angoy’s Avenue.
The competition which was coordinated by Horace Roach and Winston Benjamin saw Tucber Park and Stanleytown meeting in the final. It was Tucber Park that walked away with the trophy after edging past Stanleytown 2-1 in a keenly contested affair after leading 2-0 at half time.
Tucber Park had earlier defeated East Canje 2-0 while Stanleytown had swept aside Central New Amsterdam 4-2 in their respective semifinal encounters.
Central New Amsterdam took third place with a come from behind 3-2 win over East Canje after East Canje led 2-0 at half time.
The top teams and outstanding individual players were presented with trophies and other incentives by Mayor Waynewright McIntosh and other officials. The most valuable player reward went to Richard Simon of Tucber Park. The Best goalkeeper was Reshaun Deane of Stanleytown, while Tyrick Ogleton was rewarded for scoring the most goals.
New Amsterdam which is the oldest town in Guyana, celebrated its 132nd anniversary in October and the M&TC has organised a series of activities to mark the occasion.
Mayor McIntosh, who previously served a few years a Deputy Mayor, is in his first term as Mayor and has been leading from in front. So far he has received a number of donations, pledges and support from the business community, while a number of new businesses have opened their doors in the town. (Samuel Whyte)
