– Tops medal tally with 41
Kaieteur News – The Guyanese Athletics team gave the their country a boost in the race for the overall title with the completion of a resounding performance in the two-day competition which was hosted at the Leonora Track and Field Facility, Leonora, West Coast of Demerara.
Following a dominant opening day on Friday at the same venue, Guyana ended with 390 points yesterday, lengths ahead of counterparts French Guiana (261) and Suriname (232) as they excelled in every track event.
It was a short, action-packed day that saw sunshine grace the venue with a larger spectator pool that witnessed the 200m, 800m, Javelin, Long Jumps and 4x100m relay, in both the Girls and Boys Divisions.
Ezekiel Newton completed the 100m and 200m sweeps in the Boys category, Attoya Harvey comfortably prevailed in the Girls middle distance, while Javon Roberts did the same in the Boys middle distance races while Staffon Roach leaped to consecutive wins.
Guyana’s Nalicia Glen turned the tables on her teammate Athaley Hickson in the 200m to win in a time of 25.28s ahead of French Guiana’s Nandy Charles (25.53s), who was second, and Hinckson (25.57s).
In the Boys 200m, Newton (22.10s) triumphed over teammate Malachi Austin (22.70s) as French Guiana’s Far Pierre-Louis (22.88s) added a bronze to his medal tally.
Guyana’s Tianna Springer (2:22.17s) and Narissa McPherson (2:22.19s) had a narrow finish at the line as the former won the Girls 800m ahead of her team mate while Allanyx Brei of Suriname crossed the line third with a time of 2:42.94s.
Another controlled performance led Roberts to take the Boys 800m Gold in a time of 2:00.77s while teammate Martim Martin had to settle for bronze with a time of 2:07.50s. Suriname’s Jeffel Koorndijk gave Roberts a good challenge near the line but had to settle for second when he clocked 2:00.96s.
In the field events, Roach added the Long Jump Gold to his Triple Jump Gold as he leaped to victory with 6.88m. Finishing second was Ja-ie Van Hetten (6.16m) of Suriname and Mike Mondesir of French Guiana was third with 6.03m.
The Girls long jump was won by FG’s Kayssia Hudson (5.54m), her teammate Ame’ly Pulcherie (5.53m) was second and Guyana’s Amrist Hector (5.35m) was third. For the Girls Triple Jump, French Guiana’s Le’Ane Alfred (11.51m) and Hudosn (11.26m) were first and second while Guyana’s Krystal Morris (10.64m) finished third.
Shawn Hunte (46.85m) and David Damani (44.13m) of Guyana copped the top two spots in the Boys Javelin while Sidney Yarde of French Guiana was third (36.12m). Guyana’s Esther Marks was victorious in the Girls Javelin while FG’s Lhoane Josepg was second (30.65m) and Suriname’s Davienta Djoe (12.42m), third.
Guyana was victorious in the Mixed 4x400m relays in a time of 3:28.01s while French Guiana (3:59.34s) was second and Suriname (4:07.07s) was third.
At the end of the Athletics Championships, Guyana had a total of 41 medals (21 Gold, 12 Silver & 8 Bronze), French Guiana recorded 24 medals (5 Gold, 9 Silver & 10 Bronze) and Suriname claimed 18 (2 Gold, 7 Silver & 9 Bronze).
