– All six teams confirmed
Kaieteur News – Less than a month remains before the kick off of the Petra organisation’s 2022 KFC Goodwill Football Tournament, which has been slated for December 14 – 23, at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Christianburg/Wismar Secondary and Golden Grove Secondary have already been confirmed for the third edition of this event following their championship and runner-up finishes in the recently contested GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers Under-18 League.
These two sides are to meet with Trinidad and Tobago’s Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Champion, St. Benedict’s College, Defending Champion, Annai Secondary, SVB Academy out of Suriname and the Desrey Fox Secondary School, commonly called Waramadong.
“We are glad that all the teams we extended invitations to have accepted and will be joining our League’s top finishers,” said Petra’s Co-Director, Troy Mendonca.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Shiva Boys’ Hindu College were the inaugural champions in 2018, while the second edition of the tournament was hosted in 2019 and won by Annai Secondary, who clinched the title from Lodge Secondary, in the finale. After that, the dreaded pandemic forced the tournament into a hiatus.
However, Mendonca was belated to announce that the tournament has been given the green light by the sponsors, so they have already began their preparations for this edition of the Goodwill Tourney.
“Petra is quite elated to have this tournament back on our calendar of events to conclude a successful return to football like we envisioned. As you know, our local teams will be going up against the best school team from the Twin Island along with a strong youth team from our neighbours, Suriname.”
“We expect a high level of competition from these teams, which can only auger well for the development of grassroots football, which is what Petra is all about,” Mendonca added.
The tournament is scheduled for its official launch in the coming week.
