Dear Editor,
I write on behalf of so many of my colleagues at the Local Government Commission who are scared to speak out about the verbal abuse and intimidation received almost daily by a Senior Manager.
As females, our lives outside of work, our family and our children are often used when and if we may fault in some regard. We are told of our attire looking like it was procured from a flea market, asked if we suffer from mental health issues and told that women can only function well within the household.
My job at the Commission along with that of my colleagues was one we applied for and were interviewed for. Our contracts were signed based on our merits, experiences and qualifications. They were not handed to us because of affiliation, so when we are told daily about our incompetence, asked to perform duties outside of what we are designated to do by a person who is not even our superior, then it makes for one to question the roles of individuals within the organisation.
Mr. Editor, almost every day a complaint is filed against us, almost every day this authority comes around us trying to extract information about our colleagues and then goes to our respective heads to complain. Have you ever felt as though every day is your last at the place that puts bread on your table, not because of your incompetence as a professional but because you are a woman or because your hair is kinky or because you are educated and keep pushing?
Does being a single mother make you inadequate? Does the shoes from the Chinese store makes you less of a professional? It is not my intention to have anyone dismissed we are all working to care for our families, what we do want however is to live and work in peace and professionally.
Therefore, we are asking that you highlight our plight and here is hope that the Chairman or one of the Commissioners can have a talk with staff and find out our struggles. We preach ‘One Guyana’, but how can we attain the status if we are treated as though we are less than within an entity we give most of our service to. Unlike some who have chosen to move on to greener pastures merely for peace of mind, we have chosen to stay and serve, but please I’m asking that we are allowed to give our service freely without being victimized.
Respectfully,
