Kaieteur News – With their close victory against home team T&T Red Force, Guyana Harpy Eagles collected two points following their loss against Windwards Volcanos and are joint second with Red Force on the points table.
Volcanos are the early front runners with four points from two wins.
CCC, the other team in Zone ‘A’ has lost both of their matches and will battle Guyana from 2pm this evening in a Day/Night game at the Brian Lara Academy in South Trinidad.
CCC is the weakest team in the zone but should not be under-rated as the World Cup qualifiers showed.
Led by 37-year-old Denish Ramdin, with the experience of 74 Tests, 139 ODIs and four centuries and 17 fifties in List ‘A’ cricket, the batting will center around him and 28-year-old Bajan top order batter Jonathon Drakes who has two fifties in List ‘A’ career so far.
Drakes, the second oldest member of a young team, will hope for batting support from the aggressive Demario Richards who was wasted ‘starts’ in both matches, while Zavier Burton and All-Rounder Matthew Forde will hope to contribute with the bat today.
The biggest disappointment is the lack of an upward progression from child prodigy Kirstan Kallicharran.
On May 11, 2014 Kallicharan scored an unbeaten 404 in a 35-over under-14 school match in Port-of-Spain for the Vishnu Boys Hindu College in a Secondary Schools Cricket League quarterfinal.
But after scoring 101 against South Africa in the 2018 U-19 World Cup after having played in 2016 winning side, he has played 15 List ‘A’ matches since 2017 and has failed to score a fifty. At 22, today is a good time to do so.
The CCC bowling looks ordinary at this level and should comprise Forde, Aamari Goodrigde, Michail Powell, Romeio Greaves and Jamaica legge Abhijai Mansingh.
None of the Guyana Batters except fast bowling all-rounder Romario Shepherd has scored a fifty and the top order needs to work out their conversion rate when they get starts.
Shepherd’s unbeaten 74 from 48 balls ensured Guyana beat the Red Force by three runs as the last pair added 68 runs in last 36 balls after coming together at 201-9.
This could be the last game for Tagenarine Chanderpaul who departs for Australia next Tuesday.
The left-hander has looked the most composed batter for Guyana, while Anthony Bramble and Sherfane Rutherford are the other batters to be dismissed in the 40s.
Tevin Imlach has looked good but has been unable to convert two 30s into something significant, while Guyana’s two most experienced batters; Skipper Leon Johnson and Shimron Hetymer had have been dismissed for low scores in both matches.
The Guyana batters should be lining up to face this CCC attack and if they bat first try to get a 320 total.
CCC’s only title was in 2018 when they beat Guyana in their second trip to finals after losing to Windwards in 2013. Guyana has won nine titles but none since 2005.
