Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast Edition…
Kaieteur News – A climactic showdown is expected on Saturday at the Haslington Market tarmac, as the curtains will come down on the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast Demerara zone.
Following two nights of elimination matches, four teams remain poised to battle for the coveted title, and bragging rights for a year. They are Vryheid’s Lust, Beterverwagting (BV)-A, Lilliendaal Hustlers, and Non Pareil. Interestingly, three of four remaining entrants will be a first time finalist if they are successful in their semi-final encounter.
Giant killer Vryheid’s Lust, who are responsible for the exit of champions Melanie-B in the quarterfinal section, will face-off with traditional giant Beterverwagting (BV)-A for a place in the final. Former champion BV-A overcame the gritty Church Yard unit.
On the other hand, dark horse Non Pareil, who edged Victoria Eagles, secured a date with Lilliendaal Hustlers in the second semi-final. Hustlers bested Old School in a tense penalty shoot-out to earn a berth to the final four section.
Meanwhile, the plate section will crown a new champion following the exit of holders Belfield. The remaining teams are Portmore, Team Cruel, Buxton Diamond, and Uprising. The first semi-final will pit Portmore against Team Cruel, while Buxton Diamond will battle Uprising.
According to tournament coordinator Rawle Welch, “The semi-finals are expected to be thrilling and the fact that three of the four teams could possibly seal their maiden appearance in the championship match, highlights the growth and competitiveness of the tournament which certainly bodes well for its future. Even the plate section has been very competitive, and features several new teams, and has really brought additional flavour to the event.”
He further said, “More importantly, the support from the fans, and players has been tremendous, and has exceeded expectations despite the brief timeline that was utilized to stage the tournament following a two year hiatus which is also indicative of the passion that surrounds the event. Saturday will be no different, as the tournament concludes in front of what is expected to be one of the largest crowds to grace the venue.”
