Dear Editor,
I have had always had a special respect for Trinidad and Tobago. And even a special relationship with that country. However, it would appear that more and more some desperate Trinidadians cannot seem to be able to give up the penchant for bullish behavior. I know for a fact that some have been very bullish in a variety of ways. I know also that some have been professional and graceful, even ethical but some very unethical.
I am particularly referring to a Trinidad and Tobago Strategist, who is actually hell bent on trying to blackmail our Government and our country, in permitting Trinidadians involved in criminality to be granted licenses for business in this country. I do not know if the Trinidadian Government turns a blind eye to criminality and then will provide licenses for such major businesses.
Also, I am no enemy of RAMPS Logistics or any company that wants to do business and partner positively to develop Guyana and themselves. However, RAMPS Logistics allegedly committed a serious blunder in Guyana, for which it was fined twenty million dollars ($20,000,000) by the Guyana Revenue Authority. They are under investigation for a number of other alleged criminal activities in the country. If this is how RAMPS Logistics is commencing business in Guyana, then what kind of example is it showing to Trinidadians? What would be the opinion of the approving authorities, for licenses in Guyana by the Government of Guyana of Trinidadians in general? How many times has RAMPS escaped detection? Whenever a person or company is caught in criminality, it is always the first time. Notwithstanding as I believe they have much to offer Guyana.
We know some excellent companies, which are complying with the laws and one in particular, who has been operating in this country for a very long time and has won much respect for business ethics and professionalism. I am referring to S.M Jaleel’s, producer of BUSTA soft drinks and FRUTA juices. Their products are excellent, their PR is excellent, and they are complying with the laws of Guyana. Such companies of Trinidad and Tobago we can applaud. However, there is this business strategist it is said, but is he? Is obviously sending a message for certain powerful Politicians and possibly the Government, which Guyana is to be, blackmailed otherwise the business will move to Suriname. I wonder if this gentleman is aware that Suriname was once a military dictatorship, and they deal very sternly in matters of law. It might not be monetary fines but lengthy imprisonment.
My aim at this juncture is not to turn away our Trinidadian friends and families who want to be a part of business in our country. We welcome their experience. We welcome their wealth that they want to invest in our country. Of course, in respect to our citizens and the laws of our country, once that is established then we will welcome them. But in no way should any Trinidadian try to blackmail our Government or our country or threaten blackmail of our Government and our country. Guyana is no weakling nation. Many Trinidadian companies come to Guyana and play big but cannot pay for their accounts and services, yet full of sweet mouth, lies and cheating.
Therefore, I would like to take the opportunity to advise these guys who have this penchant for pomposity and rudeness. This would usually be aimed towards Guyana and other Caricom nations that might have been faced with economic problems one time or the other. Now that the tables have turned, they should learn to use diplomacy instead of criminality and blackmailing of our Government and country. Trinidad needs to show respect and be humble. Look at Barbados; look at the elegance of Barbados.
Sincerely,
Hajji Dr. Roshan Khan Snr.
