Kaieteur News – A total of 39 goals were scored from six matches contested on Friday’s opening night of the Petra Organisation/MVP Sports Futsal tournament, at the National Gymnasium.
The usual big names in football’s shortest format locally, didn’t hold back on leaving their marking and signally their intention of cashing in on the tournament’s $500,000 first place prize.
Bent Street, turning out with a cadre of futsal showmen, inflected a 10 – 0 drubbing of Team Spirit, with Deon Alfred slotting home a helmet-trick.
Alfred scored his four goals (37’,38’,40’,41’), backed by a hat-trick from Colin Nelson (7’,8’,35’), Adrian Aaron’s double (21’,23’) and the 6th-minute strike from William Europe compounded a superb performance from Bent Street.
Meanwhile, Goal is Money had an all-round team performance in their 6 – 0 win over Herstelling. Dextroy Adams (22’, 38’) and Michael Ballack (21’, 37’) lead the charge for their side, along with a goal each from Joshua Samuel (20’) and Darren Benjamin (40’).
Defending champions, Tiger Bay were made to work hard in their exciting 5 – 4 win over Avocado Ballers.
Former Golden Jaguars defender, King Solomon Austin (22’,40’), along with Randy Roberts (21’, 28’) netted two goals and Akil Plass hit home the game’s opening goal eight minutes into the contest for the team looking to defend their title.
Jonathan McKenzie had levelled the scores immediately after Avocado Ballers were put behind, but they were outplayed by Tiger Bay, even after benefiting from an Own Goal in the 25th minute.
Their other goals came from Martin King in the 36th minute and Shane Thorne 37th minute.
In the night’s opening game action, Game Beterverwagting earned a 3 – 1 win over Leopold Street, with goals from Jamar Horrigan (13’) and Neron Barrow (1’, 12’).
Randy Maynard was the lone goal scorer for Leopold Street.
In one of the closely contested matches of night one, Mocha Family clinched a 3-2 thriller over Alexander Village.
Kevin Agard scored the first of his two goals on the night in the sixth minute to give Mocha the lead, but Leon Yaw, who also ended with a double, pulled one back in the 11th minute.
Agard again put the East Bank community team in the lead, but Yaw would match his effort, equalizing in the 23rd minute.
However, with the scores tied, Rendell Haywood’s 27th-minute strike would turn out to be the game-winner for Mocha.
In the night’s final game, Sophia played to a 4-1 win over East Front Road.
The tournament will continue tonight with six more matches.
A clash between Stabroek Baller and Melanie will kick things off at the National Gymnasium, followed by Future Stars taking on Crane.
Linden’s Swag Entertainment will battle the Venezuelan side Vengy, while Albouystown will face Campbellville, Back Circle to play Vryheid Lust and the night’s final game will see Sparta squaring off with Channel 9 Ballers.
