Coach Moore elated with B’ce performance
By Sean Devers
Last Tuesday night a powerful Berbice team successfully defended its senior Inter-County 50 overs title which they won the last time senior Inter-County cricket was played in 2014.
Coach of team was 38-year-old former Guyana U-15 left-handed batter Julian Moore, the son of Carl Moore, one of the best cricket Administrator’s in Guyana. Moore senior, also managed Guyana U-15, U-19 and the Guyana First-Class teams.
When Julian was selected as Manager and Assistant Coach for the Guyana Jaguars in the last two rounds of the CWI Regional First-class Tournament in 2020, he joined his father as the only father/son pair to manage a Guyana Senior team.
Fast forward to October 18, 2022, the level 3 Coach from Tucber Park in New Amsterdam on debut as senior Inter-County was in the final of GCB’s inter-county tournament under lights at the Providence Stadium.
Coach Moore reflected on his first win as Berbice Senior Coach.
“I thought the guys did exceptionally well, we have a very strong unit but at the end of the day you’ve still got to go out there and play good cricket which I thought we did really well.
To come out and dominate for the most parts and to have your senior players leading from the front was really a treat to watch. Super proud of the boys and what we’ve been able to achieve over the past week,” said Julian
In 2015 a franchise League was started and the Inter-County was stopped but one of the best things the Board has done is bring back the Inter-County.
“The intercounty for us obviously is one step closer to the regional level so kudos to the GCB for reintroducing the format. It gives us the opportunity to see the cream of our talent going up against each other.
We saw a lot of good performances but most importantly we saw some good games. I think there is something special about turning up for your county,” posited Coach Moore, who won five Regional Youth titles; two at U-15 and three at U-19 levels.
The retuned of the Inter-County saw Guyana’s top players including Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford and GCB added a fourth team; the President’s X1 which included some of Guyana most talented young players like Matthew Nandu, Movindra Dindyal, but apart from a half-century from Shamar Yearwood, none of young players produced outstanding performances.
“We saw a lot of good performances, some good games but we still have some work to do to make improvements. It’s been a while but it’s here again and that’s a step in the right direction.
President of the GCB Bissoon Singh said the Franchise matches will still be played which is another step in the right direction from the GCB.
Yes, obviously I think there is still a place for that, it can be a precursor to the inter county. Look I think we’ve always have to be looking at ways to better expose our players to competitive cricket and I think that may be one of the ways to go about it,” concluded Coach Moore.
