Dear Editor,
Thanks to the incompetent, visionless and corrupt parliamentarians of Guyana since Exxon landed here, we should now sit back and watch how things are supposed to work as Exxon leads the way and Guyanese should follow. When one thinks they heard the most nonsensical thing happening in the oil sector, to Guyana’s detriment, there seem to be a new one beating it.
It seems like Exxon is writing all the contracts and agreements and Guyana’s leadership gleefully affix signature to make them legal and binding without any public announcement, review, consultation, or challenges. Exxon and its affiliates have already made plans for more projects as if they already know the approvals and permits are guaranteed, the gas to shore project also seems to be going ahead without any public announcement, review, consultation, or challenges, Exxon is now trying to tell our courts and EPA why they should be tax exempt and not liable for oil related environment disasters created by the oil operations, what kind of nonsense is this? But why be surprised since we know nothing about oil and Exxon will be our teacher and leader in the oil business as per our parliamentarians. This is why Alistair Routledge and other mouthpieces of the oil companies continue to harp how this contract is the best thing for Guyana to Guyanese, since Exxon know all. Mr. Routledge, we would like you to destroy this good oil contract and give us a bad one like the bad one you gave to Qatar. Thanks to the incompetent, visionless and corrupt parliamentarians of Guyana, we didn’t know investing a few millions in a neglected area like sports will make it better, so Exxon will teach us. We don’t know investing in cricketers, footballers, athletes, singers and musicians can be one of the greatest returns on investment because if one of them make the world stage and sign lucrative contracts overseas, they will earn more money than any graduating class at UG and other post-secondary institutions in Guyana combined. We didn’t know investing a few millions in poor communities will uplift the lives of citizens, so Exxon will teach us, and these people will sing “Praise Lord Exxon” since all governments have neglected them and Exxon comes to their rescue.
The VP has called on his supporters to go online and demonize those critical of him, particularly Glenn Lall and others like Lall. Some have answered his call, writing and posting to pro PPP newspapers and websites, mentioning how those critical of the VP wants jobs and business opportunities. Glenn Lall should for the umpteenth time explain his reason for his fight; I don’t want a job or business opportunity, I don’t envy someone for what they have, particularly if their success was achieved righteously, but at no time, I will stay silent if someone is taking what is rightfully mine, got that? You people know yourselves as you also post letters to KN; you people also confirm integrity is dead in Guyana and now survived by hypocrisy, biasness, and divisiveness. If the VP doesn’t want to be called out on transparency, why isn’t he releasing the mining contracts? Why isn’t he telling Guyana about the new oil projects and permits and what is really going on with the gas to shore project? Can his supporters explain this?
Exploiters have used many methods to control the exploited such as chains around their necks, gun to their heads, debt entrapment, threats and military action, cover operations etc. Another way is to give the masses sports, movies and reality TV. Guyanese spend more time talking about cricket, movies, the Young and Restless, the Price is Right, and Wheel of Fortune, rather than the most important pressing issues at hand, i.e., the exploitation of Guyana’s oil and resources. This allows Exxon and others to sprinkle a few millions here and there, and walk away with hundreds of billions of US$. So don’t be surprised if down the road, a new realty TV show sweeps Guyana called “ Who wants to be a millionaire?” Guyanese style sponsored by Exxon.
Regards,
R. David
