Rajmangal takes 4-for, Harris hits unbeaten 52, Troy Benn’s 72 yesterday

Kaieteur News – A fine spell of spin bowling from Martin Rajmangal and an unbeaten 52 from Steven Harris lead Guyana Prisons Service (GPS) and Guyana Police Force (GPF) respectively to victory when the Commander-in-Chief T20 cricket Tournament bowled off Monday with two matches at Police Sports Club ground.
In the morning game which commenced at 09:30hrs, off-spinner Martin Rajmangal captured 4-29 from his four overs to orchestrate the demise of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) for 89 in 13 overs despite a fighting 20 from Chateram Persaud.
GPS replied with 91-4 to win by six wickets with Tyrell Peters (24), David Wilson (19) and unbeaten knocks from Roger Phil who made 18 and Jermaine Archer with 10, batted the Prison Officers to victory.
In the afternoon game which started at 13:00hrs in hazy sunshine and good size gathering watched as defending Champions Berbice, who won the last tournament in 2019, defeated Guyana Defence Force (GDF) by 20 runs.
Police were spearheaded by an unbeaten 52 from 43 balls with four sixes and a four, from Steven Harris who got support Troy Benn, who reached the boundary two times and clearing it twice before he was bowled by Andre McFarlane, while Ravindradat Budhram was run out for 26 with two fours and a sixas GPF reached 148-4 when their 20 overs expired.
GDF could only reach 128-7 with the composed Rockell Reddy reached the boundary twice in a carefully constructed 33. He got good support from Randy Wade (22) and Paul Castello (17).
Trevor Benn took 2-19 for GPF.
Meanwhile, Major Delrae McLean explained that the tournament is played by officers in the joint Services, adding that it was last played in 2019 before the Country and Sports were shut down.
“Yes we have worked hard to get this up and running and as you can see everyone is happy and excited to be back on the field. GDF are the host this year but due to unplayable condition of the GDF ground were are here and possibly at Everest,” the Major, who is the head of the organising Committee informed.
Major McLean said the date for the Final has not been set since it depends on the availability of the Commander-in-Chief, President Dr Irfaan Ali.
Meanwhile, in yesterday’s matches, GDF beat Fire Service by 126 runs while Police continued their winning streak when they GPS.
GDF made 156-6 with Daniel Phillips hitting 59 and David Longe scoring 25 as Sunil Persaud took 2-22 for Fire Service who were restricted to 31-7.
Longe in a useful all-round performance, captured 4-9. He got support from Randy Wade and Travis Marcellino who had two wickets each.
In the afternoon game, Police, led by Troy Benn’s 72 from 50 balls and Raymond Ali who made 31, Police reached 141-5 in 20 overs.
Prison Service were bowled out for 83 in 18 overs despite a fighting 37 from Dorian Grenion as Ali, Stephan Harris and Michael Newland took two wickets.
The tournament continues today from 09;00hrs with two matches at Eve Leary.
