GCB 50 overs Inter County final
By Sean Devers
Kaieteur News – The curtains will come down this evening at Providence under lights when defending Champions Berbice face-off with Essequibo in the Final of the GCB’s senior Inter-county 50 overs cricket tournament from 14:00hrs.
For those who have been following local cricket it is no surprise that Berbice have dominated the two matches against Demerara and Essequibo since their team is packed with National players.
When you look at the players produced by Berbice in recent times for Guyana and West Indies, you can’t help but notice the disparity between Berbice and the other teams and it would be safe to say that the BCB is by far the best run Board in Guyana as the results continue to show.
With a batting line-up of Anthony Bramble and Guyana’s leading scorer in the recent Regional U-19 tournament; Rampertab Ramnauth, Berbice will back on the pair scoring quickly in the power-play.
With batters like the immensely talented 25-year-Shimron Hetmyer, Jonathon Foo, Kevin Sinclair, Romario Shepherd, Clinton Pestano, Gudakesh Motie and Veerasammy Permaul, Berbice’s batting is extremely potent and capable producing massive totals.
The team from the ancient county has a strong bowling attack of National Pacers Nial Smith, Pestano and Shepherd with support from spinners Kevin Sinclair, Permaul and Motie, all who have played International cricket for West Indies.
It is strange that Guyana Warriors off-spinner Junior Sinclair, has not bowled a single ball in two matches.
Berbice and Essequibo are the only counties that have organised ‘Trials’ so it was not really a mayor surprise when Essequibo beat Demerara.
Despite the internal issues in the ECB, including a no confident threat, which required political intervention, Essequibo have played with plenty of passion and intent on the field.
They have matched Demerara and Berbice with century makers in the form of their Keeper Kemol Savory who made a hundred in the first round at Everest when opener Kevin Boodie also got 91.
Essequibo have power hitters in Kemo Paul, Quinton Sampson, who smashed a pugnacious 85 at Bourda, Ronsford Beaton, Wasim Mohammed, Ricardo Adams and Skipper Anthony Adams.
The bowling will be spearheaded by Beaton, who bowled with pace against Demerara in his four-wicket haul as did Paul who had 4-50. Sampson is capable of bowling with pace while the senior Ricardo and Anthony Adams along with left-spinner Garfield Phillips, who removed ‘big guns’Bramble and Hetmyer when the teams last met at Bourda.
Despite only playing T20 cricket in Essequibo, the team which have six players who participate the GCA tournament for Police, have beaten the President’s X1 and Demerara on the road to today’s Final.
Admission is free and although all of the matches have been played in Demerara, the support for Berbice and Essequibo have easily bettered that of Demerara, even at the Stadium when Essequibo played the home team.
The same pitch which was used for last game will again be used for today’s day/night affair and the dew factor could come into play tonight.
While Berbice is favoured to retain the title they won when Senior 50 overs Inter-County was last played in 2014, this will be the first time they will play on this pitch while Essequibo will have the phycoligcal advantage of not only playing on this pitch, but winning on it.
