Dear Editor,
Many of the western liberal democracies like the USA, Canada and in Europe are currently witnessing a rise of populous nationalist political parties winning elections or gaining power in elections, these parties are called far-right by the liberal media while the conservative media calls them patriots. Among the messages they preach to galvanize their support, the one that strongly pulls people to their base is “foreigners are allowed to come to the country, take what is ours and change our way of life and it’s time to put our people first and others second”.
There are many countries already practicing this “us first” mentality notably China, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, among many others, so the question arises, can or will Guyana ever get a leader like this that will put Guyanese interest first and others second? There is no evidence of this mentality of the current Guyanese Parliamentarians or the other political parties that run in elections, currently in Guyana foreigners gets everything and pays nothing while poor Guyanese suffers.
The recent denying of visas for the Guyanese Robotics Teams to compete in Switzerland shows what foreign countries think of Guyanese, that Guyanese are ‘nobodies’ whose country’s oil and resources are for exploitation as their Government will gladly allow it, on the other hand if some Swiss people, if not already here, want to come and take Guyana’s oil or any of its valuable resources, they would have been free to come and take it, paying no duties, concessions, taxes, pollute the environment and suffer no consequence. So again, will Guyana ever get a “Guyanese First” leader who the next generation of Guyanese will be proud of?
