Prominent Canadian-based Guyanese softball cricketer Ganesh Ramraj continues to give back to communities across Guyana through his charitable organization, Ganesh Ramraj Youth Development Foundation. This past Sunday, Ramraj provided over 200 boxes of nutritious meals to children within his La Penitence neighbourhood and the Bourda and Stabroek market areas. According to Ramraj, he is delighted at the opportunity to once again engage in this venture that he undertakes yearly, and has for over a decade on his yearly visits to Guyana.
Ganesh Ramraj strikes a pose with some of children at his residence, 239 Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, Georgetown.
He acknowledges that this is a community initiative and thanks friends Keith, Dave, Amit and others from the neighbourhood in helping to make the event a success. He looks forward to permanently returning to Guyana in the very near future where he plans to broaden and expand his charitable work across all communities.
Ramraj, a right-handed batsman who recently celebrated a 7000 runs milestone in softball cricket in Ontario, Canada and struck an impressive 195 runs n/o for Lightning Sports Club in the Canadian Premier Softball Cricket League, is passionate and enthusiastic about cricket. He wants to share that passion and enthusiasm with youth and wants to encourage them to become involved and excited about cricket, a game that has produced great home-grown cricketers like Clive Loyd, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the late Roy Fredericks, Lance Gibbs, Alvin Kallicharran, Rohan Kanhai, Ramnaresh Sarwan and many others.
“I believe that cricket can present amazing opportunities for our youth that can lead to great accomplishments on and off the field, Ramraj counters. In recent years, there has been a surge in young participants and more and more young men and women are taking up cricket. I want to encourage and promote that kind of participation and competition amongst as many youth as possible. I look forward to being a protégée of those wanting to take up cricket. But beyond cricket my aim is also to help them in every way I could. Here I want to provide them with not just good nutrition as well, but with knowledge, experiences and the necessary tools to someday provide for themselves and their families, and contribute to building strong, resilient and sustainable communities. In this regard, I have amongst other things, given them access to a space where they can engage in sports like cricket, soccer, basketball and other sports that interest them. The proposition is straight forward. Sport is a tool to be exploited in the pursuit of building effective personal, social and cultural relations.”
Ramraj noted that this year’s meal distribution was done in memory of his late cousin Kemeraj Sookraj who passed away earlier this year in Canada. Ramraj thanks Kemeraj’s widow Christine and her 3 children, Shane, Sarah and Robin for sponsoring this year’s event. He also expressed his gratitude to all those who helped in assisting in its preparation. He extends a special thank you to Ravendra Mandolall for his coverage of the event and looks forward to working with him in the future.
In closing, Ramraj calls on communities across the country and abroad to come together to help the needy, the vulnerable and the youth of today who will one day take the helm to become leaders themselves. “We must do all we can to give them hope and help them achieve and fulfill their dreams and look to a future of exciting and unlimited opportunities.”
