Dear Editor,
The Stabroek News (SN) editorial on temptation in SN of 2022-07-28 provides no solution and completely ignores my solution published in the previous day under the SN heading, “Discipline the human will in order to achieve better”. SN managed to distill a secular headline out of a spiritual context. You did a better job with “Material and higher spirits”, which letter you also published Tuesday 2022-09-27.
Oscar Wilde was right about his and our own inability to resist temptation. My solution to temptation is therefore to give in to a more tempting temptation. I study this superior temptation in all its glory and what joys I can get out of it. As a chemist, I trained myself to look upon matter and see (imagine) the oxygen, silicon, aluminum, hydrogen and sulphur grow interlocking spikes in concrete; and the carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, magnesium, phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium combine to enable a leaf on a tree to function. Now, when those who know me can’t figure out my peculiar eating habits, I sometimes explain that I see denatured proteins leading to cancers and other diseases in all those fancily cooked or otherwise processed foods they enjoy, and further addictions in their libations.
But just what is the more tempting temptation I discovered? It is the God who made the universe for me. My study led to the conclusion that His words are faithful and absolutely true. So when I consider what people consider a juicy worldly temptation, I see its temporality and painfully complicated consequences, and don’t even feel the inclination to messing up my short life here and losing present joys.
