Kaieteur News – Skipper of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Shimron Hetmyer, lauded former West Indies Captain Guyanese, Sir Clive Lloyd, for mentoring his charges prior to their first game of the Guyana leg of the 2022 Hero CPL.
“Sir Clive is a good mentor, he is a guy who doesn’t talk a lot, but when he talks it makes a lot of sence. Basically he pointed out some simple things to us, I think it motivated the players hence they came out and played the way they did,” he posited.
The Warriors defeated the Tallawahs by 12 runs in their first game at home on Wednesday night.
Following the win, Hetmyer credited the fans for the support. “It is always phenomenal to play at home; the atmosphere in Guyana is so much more that you can ask for. I just try to get some of the guys’ attention to make sure that they are in the game because it was so loud out there, and we enjoyed every bit of it,” he added.
The victory means Guyana Amazon Warriors have clawed their way back into contention for a place in the playoffs which begins on Tuesday.
Hetmyer stated that they have to keep working to improve with every game. “We have to keep playing good cricket and work on improving our strengths and weaknesses,” he related.
Quizzed on how the pitch played since his team piled up a respectable 178 and then the Tallawahs ended with 166. Hetmyer said it was a good pitch and commended the ground staff. “I must commend the grounds-men for doing a fantastic job and generally the pitch played really well,” Hetmyer noted.
Warriors will take on Trinbago Knight Riders, who have also been struggling to accumulate steady points. That fixture is slated for Saturday night. Warriors will be in action again on Sunday night against front-runner Barbados Royals, who have already qualified for the next stage with 16 points from eight wins after featuring in nine encounters.
Four countries are jointly hosting the 10th edition of the biggest party in sport including St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
