Kaieteur News – Family members of a 45-year-old motorcyclist were confident that he would have survived after being struck down on Friday by a canter truck along the Albion Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six.
That confidence, however, was shattered hours later after doctors at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital gave them the devastating news that their loved one, Imran Haniff, of High Reef Albion, Corentyne had succumbed to his injuries.
Haniff was struck down around 11:10 hrs on Friday. Footage of the accident showed that he was riding east, along the northern side of the public road. As he approached Cooper Street, he slowed down his motorcycle to turn south into the street but as he was doing so a blue canter truck, which was heading in the same direction at a fast rate, crashed into him from behind.
The impact of the collision threw him off his motorcycle and he landed on the road. He sustained injuries about his body as a result.
According to eyewitnesses, when they rushed to render assistance, he was bleeding but conscious at the time, leading them to believe that he had sustained minor injuries. They thought he would have survived after being taken to the Port Mourant Hospital. However, he was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital. When his relatives visited, they too believed that Haniff would have survived, but this was not to be as by Friday evening he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the truck driver has been taken into custody, as police continue an investigation.
