GSA launches Nex-Gen School’s Coaching Academy…
By Sean Devers
On Wednesday at the Sophia Primary School in A-Field, Sophia, the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) launched the Nex-Gen Primary Schools Coaching Primary Programme, which is sponsored by Guyana Beverages Inc., located on the East Bank of Demerara.
The Programme involves eight schools with a total of 400 students; half of them being Girls and other half being Boys. The program commenced at 14:30 hrs with the 25 girls being taken through their paces with GCA Coach, Kenroy Joseph.
President of the GCA Neil Barry, a former Guyana Cricketer, told the 50 excited students, the Sophia Primary School’s Head Mistress Audrey Sue, Marketing Manager of Guyana Beverage Inc., Collis Venture, and Dr Olato Sam from the Ministry of Education, about the aim of this programme.
Barry informed that the eight-week programme which ends in the third week on November, 14 of the best students of each school (7 boys & 7girls) will be taken on a tour of Queen’s College before going onto the QC ground for a competition.
Both, Dr Sam and the School’s Headmistress, spoke of the importance of doing well in academics and sports.
They told the pre-teens that they needed to have an 80 percent attendance at school, be disciplined and listen to what their coaches and teachers say.
Dr Sam asked the gathering if they knew who Shimron Hetymer and Stefanie Taylor were and surprisingly many of them put up their hands to answer in the affirmative.
The Sophia Primary School’s programme commenced with the Girls being coached by Kenroy Joseph who was assisted by Shamia Carter, while the Boys had their first session yesterday.
Each child was refreshed by a box of ‘Kool Kidz’, which is one of the many brands of Beverages produced by Guyana Beverages Inc.
The Sophia Primary school has a massive ground but according to the headmistress, it is not used because it’s in a soggy condition for many areas.
If the condition of the ground is improved the school saves the transportation cost to take the students to other venues, which many times they have to pay a rent for the hosting of their activities.
Barry noted that if the ground’s condition is improved and a cricket pitch is installed there, the Sophia team which plays in the GCA competition, can have a place to practice and host matches.
The Sophia Primary school, in the last five years, has produced students for President’s College, Bishop’s High School and St Rose’s High School.
Meanwhile, other schools which will benefit from the coaching programme are Ketley Primary, which will be coached by Akaze Thompson, Rama Krishna Primary (Coach Kervin Ross), Enterprise Primary School (Rawle Merell), St. Pius Primary (Ranole Bourne), Agricola Primary (Pernel Christie), Redeemer Primary (Dorian Best) and South Ruimveldt Primary (Rawle Merell & Kenroy Joseph).
