Dear Editor,

We all listened to the discussion on Kaieteur Radio Tuesday evening between Publisher Glenn Lall and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo as they discussed oil and other matters of interest to the Guyanese public.

First, we must thank Mr. Glenn Lall for his courage, patriotism and for getting the Vice President in an open debate.

Second, whether they agree or disagree, VP Bharrat Jagdeo has proved that he is a skillful political gladiator pulling out figures sometimes appearing like the magician pulling the rabbit out of a hatch.

The old folks would say he is a real slippery ochro.

For the next encounter, I suggest first, that the format be changed so that there is a knowledgeable and strong moderator, allowing questions from Mr. Lall and giving Mr. Jagdeo or whoever has a fixed time to respond.

This means that neither side should interrupt the other as happened throughout last evening, oft time losing us in this crosstalk.

During the discussion, there were some ridiculous things said. Take for example, the cost of a hospital. To find a reasonable cost, one should for e.g., identify the location and what are the things that the Government requires, for e.g. should the hospital carry a helicopter pad on the roof or some designated area for emergencies.

On the question of health care, what bothered me is that no one addressed the yet unresolved issue of installing hi-tech modern sophisticated equipment and not having sufficient trained personnel to maintain, repair and operate such equipment. There is a cost to all of this.

Today, at a Government Health facility most of the medicines come from questionable sources and questionable quality.

I was present and overheard at a function some two months ago, the Minister of Health being asked why after being advised more than a year ago neither the public nor private sectors are bringing the live saving education, so persons at great expense must travel regularly overseas to obtain such.

The Minister and Ministry have remained silent on this and other matters.

Then there is the credibility gap that came up when Mr. Glenn Lall posed the question the nation is asking: where is the feasibility study for this billion-dollar-gas to shore project.

Is it the same haste that allowed for the billions wasted on the Skeldon factory. The Enmore Packaging Plant, the Fibre Optic Cable Project, The Marriott Hotel and the Berbice River Bridge.

Recall in 2015, the PPP sought to increase the toll for the Berbice River crossing to protect investment of the Private Sector partners and to date, the PPP Government has not told the public, why the recommendation to locate the bridge from Stanleytown to Ithaca, which would have cost half of the amount spent was not implemented.

Let me again thank and compliment Mr. Glenn Lall for his courage and for helping to open our eyes to the danger posed by a Government that represents half of the population but behaves as though it represents all of the people, so that there is no need to consult anyone but as it appears that they can rule believing they have the divine right of kings.
