…Charlestown Secondary clinch ExxonMobil U14 Schools titles
It was a fitting climax to the ExxonMobil, Petra-organised U14 championship, as Charlestown Secondary became the first school to clinch both boys and girls championships.
The curtains came down at the Ministry of Education Ground on CARIFESTA Avenue last evening on what has been an entertaining tournament, with scores turning up to see Charlestown beating Ann’s Grove 3 – 2 on kicks from the penalty spot in the Boys Division, while Charlestown girls got the better of their counterparts from East Ruimveldt 2 – 1.
The Boys championship lived up to the pre-game hype. National U15 player, Malcolm Hendricks scored in the 19th minute – a beauty from way outside – to give Charlestown the 1 – 0 cushion.
But not to be outdone, Tiquan Frank pulled the game back into balance with his strike in the 26th minute.
After being unable to be separated in extra time, the two teams went down to penalty and it was Charlestown who would hold their nerves to take the $300,000 which will go towards a school project.
Ann’s Grove, for their valiant effort and finishing second, will head back to the East Coast of Demerara with $150,000 towards a school project.
Charlestown Secondary was also named the tournament’s Most Disciplined Team.
Hendricks was named the competition’s most valuable player. His teammate, Deangelo Dick won the Best Goalkeeper award.
Jason Sandiford of Dolphin Secondary, who netted a total of 13 goals, was named the Highest Goalscorer.
Meanwhile, in the Third place match-up, Cummings Lodge defeated West Ruimveldt 4-2 to pocket $75,000 for a school project. West Ruimveldt collected $40,000 which will go towards a school project.
Over in the Girls championship, the defending champions went down to Charlestown 2-1, thanks to strikes from Hadassah Smith and Chelsyi Lupe.
Azaria Wilson in the 45th minute goal came in a losing effort.
For the win, Charlestown girls won $300,000 towards a school project; East Ruimveldt, for finishing second, won $150,000 towards a school project.
In the third place playoff, New Campbellville had the better of New Central 3-0 on kicks from the penalty mark.
