Dear Editor,
When oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia, Standard Oil now Chevron oil company of USA provided a low estimate of the amount of oil and sucked the Saudis into a lopsided contract, which Chevron does to most of the third world. Chevron’s CEO then gave a speech to their shareholders, boasting of the new oil bonanza and how huge returns were in store for them. The Saudis then asked for renegotiation after hearing highlights of the speech and Chevron refused, quoting the sanctity and binding of contractual agreement, the Saudis response to Chevron was, when the Saudi people know they were robbed, there will be attacks on the oil infrastructure, the oil companies supply system and at the compound where the oil employees lived, realising the serious implications of this, Chevron reluctantly renegotiated. The Saudis not only got their fair share, they are now a major player in the world oil business, even the most powerful person of the world, The US President whether Republican or Democrat, has to listen to the Saudis where oil is concerned.
Guyana’s leaders who openly denounce renegotiation, don’t even want to enforce the terms, conditions and regulations stipulated in the current contract to protect and safeguard Guyanese. It’s infuriating to watch TV programme with leaders and their surrogates of the past three administrations making excuses and defending the signing off on oil blocks and the oil contract, with reasons like, Guyana do not have the necessary experts, the necessary oil and negotiating skills, they didn’t know the quality and amount of oil when the contracts were signed, these wasn’t the reasons Ramotar and Trotman gave, as both said they signed because they were told to sign, these people say things so non-sensical and ludicrous one would laugh, but don’t, due to seriousness of the situation. The only expertise and experience the leaders seem to have are lying, deceitfulness and cronyism among other despicable characteristics.
If one is not acquainted with a particular business, a sensible business person would still ask the necessary questions like, what’s the value of the assets? What’s my investment? What’s my returns? When and how will I get paid off? If the answers don’t sound good without written guarantees, you don’t have to know about oil to understand if it’s good or bad business for the country.
Superpowers, Deep State and Juggernaut Corporations have one weakness, they can’t afford to lose money, as this is the fundamental basis of their existence. Despite all their lies, sanctions, invasions and bombings of Middle East Countries, the people rebelled, and it cost them money, so they are now calling for yes, renegotiations with Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, etc, however Guyanese cannot use these methods for renegotiation, as the Govt. is fighting for the oil companies and the oil courts are in countries that are the birth places of third world colonisation.
Glenn Lall’s Gandhi-like non-violent protest can work if Guyanese have the will and the perseverance, if people of all backgrounds come out and protest, disrupting the shorebase operations and preventing the oil companies’ employees from working for a long while, the oil companies will lose money and will have to renegotiate, as Guyanese have no other tools.
The newspapers some time ago posted pictures of people participating in oil spills training, I thought those were city council employees cleaning streets, they had no breathing equipment or hazmat suits (hazardous material suits) as oil and petrochemical exposure primarily target the lungs and nasal passages. This is the type of nonsense Guyanese have the will and perseverance for, from the oil companies and the leaders, will Guyanese ever get the will and perseverance to join Glenn Lall’s fight for their own betterment? Only time will tell.
