GCC two-week Camp ends…
By Sean Devers
Founded in 1858, the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) was located at Parade Ground opposite the Promenade Gardens before being moved to its present location at Bourda in December 1885 as Bourda, which hosted the first 30 of the 32 Tests played in Guyana, is rich in History.
On Friday, at a venue which hosted the first Test match win by West Indies in 1930, the curtains came down on a two-week youth Camp with the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles Ramson Jr, giving the feature address.
The 10-day Camp was the first such event since the pandemic and bowled off last Monday under the watchful eyes of Coaches Peter Persaud, Gavin Nedd and Orin Bailey.
Green Gibraltar Inc provided sponsorship of $120, 000 for the payment of the Coaches while the participants, the youngest being six-year-old Messiph Hennandez, were divided into three groups.
At the end of the Camp each participant was given a medal while the top three from each group were presented with medals.
Among those who attended the Camp were the two sons of former West Indies Test batter and West Indies Female selector, Travis Dowlin.
Along with Minister Ramson, GCC’s Vice-President and Ex-GCB Head Ramsay Ally, Jonathon Yearwood and Club Manager Rudolph Singh shared the head table.
The Minister told the 40 participants which included two females, he was told by former Guyana and West Indies U-19 batter Paul Persaud as youngster at GCC that he should always try to be the Best in whatever he did.
“I will always remember those words of advice given in front of the Clive Lloyd Stand and it has been what I have always strived for in whatever I do in my life. But what does it mean to be the best? It does mean you want to be the best because you are selfish or to the detriment of your team. It is a positive ambition that improves you. If someone gets the most runs or takes the most we must be happy for them but it should mean that you did not practice as much as they did,” the proactive Minister explained.
If the batter made 100 and practiced for two hours you should practice for four hours. You should listen to your Coaches and try to correct your flaws which prevented you from doing well and be focused and don’t get distracted from being the best,” said Ramson, who was appointed Minister on August 5, 2020.
Minster Ramson, a left-hander for Everest, played as a semi-professional in the UK when he was studying. Ramson achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Law (with the highest marks in intellectual property law) at the private University of Bucking-ham in England and his desire to be the motivated him to work harder that the foreign students who had more opportunities and better facilities than him.
“I topped the class in everything I did and education is very important, but still try to play a sport,” Minister Ramson encouraged the eager youngsters.
In 2016, the pro-active Minister resigned from Parliament to go to the United Kingdom (UK) after was awarded a Chevening Scholarship to pursue a Master’s of Science (Msc) degree in oil and gas enterprise management at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and also played cricket for his University.
The Sports Minister who, recently scored 54 in a century stand with President Irfaan Ali who made 105 as the Cabinet opposed the high command of the Guyana Police Force in a tape ball match at the National Park Tarmac, told the participates, the parents, GCC officials and the media that there were four basis shots in batting.
He got four participants to demonstrate the forward and backward defensive shots along with cut and the pull to test them to see if they had learnt from their Coaches.
