Senior CASA Championships…
– Fernandes claims Gold, Chin secures Bronze for Masters in Poland

Guyana, on the back of wins against host Jamaica by their Women and Men teams, secured both the team titles when the 37th edition of the Wata sponsored Senior CASA Championships concluded yesterday evening at the Liguanea Club in Jamaica.
Meanwhile, in Poland, in the World Masters, Nicolette Fernandes won Gold while fellow Guyanese Richard Chin took Bronze in the Men’s category.
In Jamaica, the Guyanese Women, who dominated the with four of their players being in the semi-finals as Ashley Khalil eventually won her first Senior CASA Singles Title, beat Jamaica 5 – 0 to take the Women’s Team title.
Guyana are defending Champions in the Women’s team, the Men’s Team and Overall titles successfully retained all three titles.
Taylor Fernandes beat Savannah Thomson (11-2, 11-4, 11-4), Akeila Wilshire defeated Sanjana Nallapatl (11-6, 11-2, 11-3), Ashley Khalil sank Mia Todd (11-4, 11-2, 11-3), Ashley DeGroot beat Melissa Lue-Yen (11-4, 11-2, 11-2) and Abosaide Cadogan beat Mia Lake (11-7, 11-6, 11-4).
In the Men’s final, Alex Arjoon began with a win before Daniel Ince lost to make it 1-1.
The third match was between 33-year-old Chris Bennie who had earlier won a record 10 Senior CASA Singles titles and Junior CASA Champion Shomari Wiltshire, who seemed tired from participating in Junior CASA, Commonwealth Games, World Junior Games and senior CASA, and was beaten 3-0 as Jamaica extended their lead to 2-1.
Jason Ray Khalil closed out the match to level the score 2 – 2 leaving the final match the deciding match involving Samuel Ince who won 3 – 2 with a spirited fight.
On the road to yesterday’s finals, Guyana’s Men defeated the Cayman Islands 3-2.
Wiltshire and Arjoon were the only Guyanese to lose their matches as there were wins for Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, his cousin Daniel Ince and Khalil.
Samuel started the evening on a winning note when he beat Kasun Abeysekera (11-6, 11-5, 11-2) while Daniel defeated Jace Jarvis (11-9, 11-7, 11-5) and Khalil got the better of Jake Kelly (11-7, 11-4, 11-7.)
Cayman Island’s Cameron Stafford beat Arjoon in longest and most competitive match of the night.
After going down 4-11 in first game, Alex fought back to take the second game 11-3 to level the score 1-1, before losing 6 -11 and 4 -11 in the next two sets. Julian Jarvis also defeated Wiltshire (0-11, 1-11, 7-11).
Later in the night the Guyanese Girls, aided by a couple of walkovers, hammered Barbados 5-0 as they continued their dominance in this year’s Championships.
Singles finalist Taylor Fernandes beat Muffin Stollmeyer (11-4, 11-3, 11-4), Ashley DeGroot defeated Eboni Atherley (11-4, 11-6, 11-2) before 2022 Caribbean Squash Queen Ashley Khalil whipped Jodi Smith-Padmore (11-3,11-2, 11-0).
The Guyanese Girls continued their brilliant showing with a 5-0 win against T&T.
Victoria Arjoon beat Tessa Martin (11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8), Khalil was clinical in her win against Marie Claire-Barcant (11-6, 11-2, 11-2), Akeila Wilshire sank Chioe Walcott (11-2,11-6, 11-7), Fernandes defeated Alexander Yearwood (11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8) while Abosaide Cadogan won her match by walk over.
In Friday’s action, Guyana’s Veteran Team lost to Jamaica 4-1
Jamaican Chris Bicknell got a walk over before Michelle Low lost to Gill Bennie (11-1, 11-4, 11-4), Guyana Coach and CASA President Ramon Chan-a-Sue beat Bruce Levy (11-9, 11-0, 12-10), Tian Edwards lost to Karen Anderson (11-1, 11-1, 11-0) while Brian Young lost to Joey Levy (11-4, 11-9, 11-8).
